Bengals Special Teams Coaches Happy With The Draft

All word from Bengals Coaches is how excited the Special Teams were loaded up in this draft. More so than most drafts. The Bengals went all out to get Special Teams players who also have the talent to play Offense or Defense. They even got a Punter. A lot of Kick Return guys and guys who can fly down the field and make tackles and Blocks on Special Teams.

Coach Taylor said they were in a position to get the Special Teams coaches a lot more help, but these players will help on Offense and Defense as well.

Coach Taylor also said he doesn't see RT as a huge need. In fact he feels he has Carman and others to let Williams and Collins ease back from injuries. Taylor said they ae more stocked on O Line that some people think. So it gave them a chance to add the DE and everybody after that can not only play Offense or Defense, but ae great Special Teams additions. Taylor and the Coaches think they are well set for another Super Bowl run, and they like this draft very much, it filled areas of need with top talent.

Also, if you look at the speed times, the Bengals just got a lot faster. Some of fastest players in the draft. They even added a track and field star as well as his football, who can do shot put and pole vault and Olympics things like that. Great Athletic Ability added in this draft at all picks.

One thing I heard was they never had to scramble like last year. They got a lot of times on day 2 & 3 one of their top 2 and when picking where they were ….pretty targeted.

Happy with this because we're putting together a complete team!

Hopefully Robbins can help us win some field position battles and deliver some coffin corner kicks to make the other team struggle to get away from their goal line and bury them deep, as well as force them to go a long way to score.

Special teams could play a big part in deciding some games (more so than usual), so I'm pumped that it will be a strength!

Yes, because it's easy for fans to forget that 1/3 of the game is Special Teams.  There is offense and defense but just as important is special teams.  It's huge for your back-up players to be starters and stars on special teams.  Yes the punter drafted, but he may get competition from the punter who replaced Huber.   These Kick Returners drafted but they will get competition from the kick-returners and special teams players from last year.  So even though Bengals have went to Super Bowl and AFC Championship back to back years, there will still be great competition and players fighting for jobs in practices, training camps, preseason games.  That keeps the fire of competition and winning burning, with players not slacking off in training, and chasing the ultimate goal of a Super Bowl WIN that has been in Bengals reach last 2 years.

With Brad Robbins, Tycen Anderson, Jordan Battle, and Charlie Jones joining the ST group,
I feel this will be the most improved aspect of our team.
They may be downright scary.

Having one trick ponies that are only good at special teams hurt us against KC last year, when Boyd went down. If you play special teams, you should be able to play your position very well too. When you can only dress 45 on game day it is a must that special teamers can also play WR, safety, or whatever position during the game without any drop off.

My only concern is that the coaches will not get these guys enough play time to develop at their natural position. They play the starters even if they are worn out and breathing heavy. When we have fresh backups on the bench. You cannot expect all development to come in practice.

Any team is ALWAYS going to have drop off when you lose a number 1 or 2 WR and try to replace him with WR 4 or 5. That's why they are numbers 4 and 5 instead of 1 and 2. That said, this kid from Purdue can flat out ball.

Special teams got the Punter (AND HOLDER very imporntant) that was needed, a corner for maybe only a year but has 4.1 speed if the wind is blowing the right direction, another guy that could possibly turn into a 4 year+ special teams captain, a depth RB that is going to develop as a blocker on the punt team, and finally a big long fast WR that is all raw athleticism.

Simmons might be smiling bigger than Lou this Monday morning.

According to Drue Chrisman, Darrin Simmons was very upfront with him about bring in competition for the punting job. He says the expected " that he welcomes the competition as it makes everyone better" may the best leg win

Bengals' ST were ranked #26 in the league according to Gosselin. Granted, Philly and KC were #31 and #32, respectively, but Buffalo was #5 so it's hard to draw a line between record and ST. Still, it's a solid metric and I've long thought Simmons got too much credit for his unit. I'm glad they think they got some help.

Drop off from Boyd to Taylor compared to drop off from Boyd to Chuck Sizzle is a big difference. We have been setting pat with Taylor {2 years} and S Morgan {4 years}. I do not care if you play special teams you got to be good enough to step on the field at your position WR S LB whatever it is.

When Chase and Higgins went down Irwin stepped in and did ok good enough to get wins. But when Boyd went down, we had no slot guy that could step in because we carried two guys that cannot get open at the slot WR on the team. We knew this for a few years, but we never made a move to improve the slot WR till it bit in the azz in the KC game in playoffs. When some fans including myself was bringing it up last year and years before. Do not wait to improve depth you can always find guys to better special teams and depth if you really test these guys then you will know your screwed if they got to play. Lot of people was complaining about WR depth you have to have slot depth as well as outside depth. Injuries can pop up at any position.

I have never really been a fan of Simmons overrated.

I hear that. For years I tried to be somewhat objective about it- in the midst of his candidacy for Head Coach (!) - and Who Dey Nation was having none of it. Treated me like I was attacking the Pope lol

Last year really was awful. I even felt bad for him. Everything blew up in his face. Hopefully this year things will regress to the mean.

Yeah, it seems he fell off pretty bad after the fans was pushing him for head coach.
