If you don't see the penalty clearly -- and obviously he did not see it clearly -- then don't make a call at all, rather than a blatantly wrong call. I'm glad Tee called out the ref as it is basically supporting the Bengals DB corps. With gambling a thing & the NFL tied to it, it's waaaay past time to have dedicated officiating crews that only live, breathe & sleep NFL. Also needs oversight from the federal government. All officials should be non fans of the NFL. Hucholi JR is the worst ref in the game.

Even if the refs and their relatives are not involved in gambling, or not fans of particular teams, the element of gambling must have added great pressure to these part-time refs. They go back to their job in middle school or high school and parents and co-workers and anyone that knows they're a ref is making known how important it is which players do well or which teams win. If they are full-time refs, and getting paid accordingly, at least their associates know that being an NFL official is their main job and that their livelihood depends on getting the calls right or they could lose their job. If their main job is teaching an English class or doing accounting or being a rancher, then they are not as isolated from the pressure. They still have their full-time job. By the main thing is it would seem that being a ref in a billion-dollar business should take up 40-hours a week anyway, studying and reviewing and traveling and being evaluated, etc. There is now a huge amount of money riding on their decisions.

What I would say, is they need full time officials, and officials should not get to referee games where the team playing is from the city the official lives in. Also, I think they need a review board that grades the games each week, not only to determine an official's accuracy with calls, but looking for favoritism. Because, gambling or not, we all know that exists. |
