Andy Dalton’s visit to a specialist is set for Monday afternoon, a league source told PFT, and after the appointment the Bengals and Dalton believe they’ll have a better idea if Dalton has a chance to return in four weeks or if the Bengals will have to shut him down for the season.
A.J. McCarron becomes the starter and is the only other quarterback on the active roster. The Bengals have reached out to Ryan Mallett and Christian Ponder though no decision by any side has been reached, the source said. Jason Campbell, who was the Bengals’ backup last season, retired last summer and has previously been clear that he’s not interested in a return.
The Bengals have Keith Wenning on the practice squad.
Dalton suffered a fractured right thumb during Sunday’s loss to the Steelers. Though the source said there’s some level of optimism that the trip to the specialist will reveal a four-week timetable, the Bengals know the timing of the injury and the calendar make it more likely that he won’t play again until next season.
Ponder was recently released by the Broncos. Mallett recently worked out for the Ravens; he was cut by the Texans earlier in the season.

Depends on if you said the Bengals might grab him, or if they should grab him. Because getting Mallett remains a dumb idea.

Ponder has the better mental makeup, but lacks physical tools. Mallet has the physical tools, but lacks the mental makeup.

Honestly, I can't really see any benefit to bringing in either of those guys. At least with Wenning, he has knowledge of the Bengals offensive system. Our best bet is to hope that McCarron can pick up some slack, and the rest of the team rallies around him.
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

Oh, lucky them! Now, maybe Mallett can quit on two teams in the same season.

Good.
Signing Mallet is like buying a sports car and then hiring a crackhead to drive it.

Glad Mallet is off the market. I'm guessing we'll sign Ponder as long as he doesn't fall apart during his workout.

The biggest drawback to Ponder is his inability to throw a deep ball, which takes AJ's go route out of the plan..

We're only looking for backup/insurance for McCarron, but I'd definitely prefer someone with starting experience over Keith Wenning. Hue got Palmer up to speed in a couple weeks in Oakland. Ponder wasn't terrible for Minny. At least he protected the football.

It's not like we're going to find a gem at this point to hold a clipboard. If Dalton's injury is only a few weeks, then Ponder (or whoever we bring in) will go to 3rd string or cut.

Ponder is a bum (backup quality), but at least he's worthy of a roster spot on a team of professionals where as Mallet isn't.

Why not just keep Sanu up to speed and use him if it comes down to needing a QB?

Oh, I know that, that's why I said in the other thread that we will roll with AJ Mac the rest of the way and if he goes down we're done....
