Chad Johnson and AJ Green… “this close”

With Andre Johnson getting in the HOF this year, we had two players on our team that, at their peak, went toe to toe with Andre Johnson.

Andre Johnson CLEARLY has the lead in career receiving yards 14,185 to Chad’s 11,059 and AJs 10,514.

Andre Johnson had 70 TDS to 67 for Chad and 70 for AJ.

However… Andre Johnson played 193 games vs 166 and 158 respectively.

Andre has 4 total all pros (two first team, two second team), to chads four (three first and one second), and Ajs two, both second team.

Andre was a 7 time pro bowler, to 6 for Chad and 7 for AJ.

Andre is 11th all time in receiving yards, Chad is 40th and AJ is 48th. This does include tight ends.

If they both just had a few more seasons of good production, we could have two more hall of famers. But with the league changing to a receiving league, they will continually get pushed down the list. Davante, Tyreek, Keenan Allen, Amari cooper and Diggs will likely be above Chad this year or next. They will hold their for a few years, but there are just so many players above Chad and AJ.

The only case for Chad would be what his impact was for a historically bad franchise and making the bengals, and NFL, cool.

Our guys definitely deserve it. FWIW Chad is sort of more famous than many people actually in the HoF and generally beloved.

This is the only reason that he would get in. On career accolades alone, he falls short, IMHO.

It's a shame because if you watched those two play then you would no that they are HOF caliber!

If the Bengals can win a Superbowl or two during the Joe Burrow era, it will help the chances of former Bengal greats to get into the HOF. It takes a lot to get past the stigma of being a small market team, along with getting past the stench of the Mike Brown iron fist rule era.

AJ Green just never reached the peak needed for real HoF consideration. He was never a 1st Team All-Pro and never led the NFL in receiving yards (5th was the highest he got). He's about 4k yards behind Andre, so he missed out on the peak and missed out on the duration. He really didn't do a ton after his first 5 years.

Chad certainly had the peak, multiple 1st Team All-Pros, a receiving title, and arguably the best WR in the NFL over a 3 year span... but he didn't do it long enough. He's 40th in receiving yards right now between DeSean Jackson and Joey Galloway. I think if he was on a team that won he could have overcome the lack of duration, but that PLUS the lack of winning has made him drop even though I think he should be a fringe candidate.

Granted I didn't think Andre Johnson was going to get in either. I thought he'd be in the same category as Chad and Brandon Marshall with guys like AJ Green and Roddy White being a small step/category behind them.

This is why I don't understand Dan Fouts in the HoF and not Anderson..

I just don;t see any relationship with HOF inductees getting it do to the success of a team after that player has played.. What is a greater impact is how the team does during the careers of the team or teams they played with during their career.

All due respect to Bengals past players but I only see two former Bengal players that for sure should be in HOF and that is both Andersons (Ken and Willie), and even with the success the bengals have had last few years, neither are still in... and with the idea of playing for a big market team help getting you in... how is Dillion not in, he ended his career with a SB ring and a great season with New England, you would think that would have put him in with the NE SB ring on his side, yet he is not.

I don;t think being from Charger got him in over Anderson being a Bengal, if you look the 70s, Bengals were one of the top teams in the AFC, Chargers were not, they had a short run of 4 years in 80s, both Anderson and Foust deserve it but i think it was more the type offense Foust and Chargers had that got more PR, than the Bengals, but the 70s/ early 80s Bengals were given good amount of respect back then

Guys who follow their NFL career with a media/broadcasting career get a bump in odds. They're in the public so their name is more fresh in everyone's minds, but also they get to become buddies with the other media folks who are in charge of writing articles that can create or shape narratives of who is worthy of being inducted.

Not that it's fair or means their bid is actually any better, but it just seems to be the reality of how it works.

He does fit the criteria for Hall of “Fame.” Literally everyone knew who Chad was during his playing days. He was the definition of a star. Sadly, he just doesn’t have the numbers though.

Huge fan of Chad and AJ but the longevity wasn't there.... they fell off the cliff

Chad last 3 out of 4 years he didn't crack 1000 yards and his last season in NE was 276 and he played 15 games with Tom Fricken Brady

AJ last 6 out of 7 years he didn't crack 1000 yards (includes 1 missed season)

End of day these guys didn't finish the job but their prime years was absolutely amazing.

Andre Johnson played with a few bad QBs in his day.

Both of these guys had careers that fell of a cliff when when they reached a certain age. AJ's because of that ankle injury and Chad because...well I am not sure. Maybe age and distractions. Their lack of longevity kills their chances, especially in AJs case.

Chad deserves to be in because of the career he had and his imprint on the game IMO. What he brought to the NFL went way beyond the field...that's up for debate if that actually matters or not though when it comes to getting into the HOF.
