So Mike Brown now says a new deal with Chase is unlikely this year…ugh here we go again. Will this man never learn? Listening to him give excuses as to why we can’t afford to do things is so ridiculous. Other teams manage to do it but somehow he straight faced tries to tell people we just can’t afford to do it. By not paying Chase now the Bengals are LITERALLY only costing themselves MORE MONEY. How is that not completely obvious to him? The deal he will get is obvious. It’s Jefferson’s deal with a tiny bump for good measure. Simple as that. Waiting til next year will cost them atleast 10-20 mil. They waited til the last minute on Burrow too and it cost them an extra 3 mil per year. This man’s logic is so flawed it’s mind numbing.

He literally said he will “bend over backwards” to sign Chase. I guess both you and Kelsey Conway missed that part.

Mike Brown hasn't been in charge of contracts for a long time. That's Katie and Troy's department.

It's not up to the Bengals really. I'm sure they will have an offer on the table soon for Chase.
Chase doesn't have much incentive to sign right now. With the cap continuing to rise and the way that contracts are heading, he'd be pretty dumb to sign this year.

I think he does have a huge incentive, football is a violent sport and one shot to the back or neck could change everything for Chase ask Ryan Shazier!

Chase still has 2 years left. Im not sure it is an urgent matter to get him signed right now.

By not extending him now, the price only goes up. What is hard to understand about that? Unless Mikey is hoping he has a down year so he can lowball him. Why would u hope for that though? Pissing your player off by making his new contract a long, drawn out ordeal is senseless when we all know youre going to have to give it to him. Why not get it over with, save money AND make your star player happy going into a crucial season. They waited til the last minute on Burrow and cost themselves 3-4 million a year. It literally does not make ANY sense to wait.

It was a pretty bad interview by MB. It was a tough read, hopefully it didn't sound as bad in person. He could have left some of that out.

Yes but then his current price goes up because you are paying him more this season and next season than you need to.

His price goes up, but so does the cap, giving more room to pay him.

I think they usually extend contracts. The last two years would still be in effect.

Are you a very close friend of Mike's? You gotta be if he confided all this information with you...

Jerry Jones interview was bad enough to provide MB some cover.

The PLAYER has to WANT TO SIGN the contract now.
Hmmm...your contention is that by not signing him now, the price goes up. Well, WHY would Chase sign now, if he could get more next year?

He can sign an extension now and get the guaranteed money up front. Injury insurance is what drives the desire to sign now. Wanting more money is what drives waiting. It's a gamble for both sides.

With wideouts set to break the market every year between now and 2 years from now Chase either should decide to wait until his 6th year or sign now. Or at least not "hold in". Given it's likely his choice to want to wait for CeeDee and others to now sign (after waiting for JJ).
He'll be waiting forever if he keeps waiting to make sure he is the highest paid.

I believe it can be negotiated for part of the new deal to also go into effect during the remaining year(s) of the existing deal if the team chooses to do so in order to reduce the cap hit in the later years.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Ok that makes sense to throw some of the money in early if you have some space.

Funny the OP uses Jefferson as the "standard". He does realize Minny didn't extend him until after year 4. Chase is entering his 4th year.

Yep. That’s exactly what Joe Goodberry was pointing out in response to this particular nonsense.
