Noelvi Marte

Post-PED Marte continues to struggle. He has played 23 games so far in winter ball, and is hitting .221 with 1 HR...a .299 OBP, .325 SLG and .624 OPS. Unless something changes drastically during spring training, he seems destined to start in AAA to prove himself again.

I was stoked when they got Marte, and I'm not totally giving up hope for him, but man he's looked lost since returning from the suspension...and to make matters worse, his defense, which has never been great, has also gotten worse...including 5 errors and a sub .900 fielding % in winter ball. 

Unless they add somebody to the mix, right now it looks like a combination of Candelario and Santiago at 3rd.

He needs to start the season in Louisville or possibly lower. The intent should be to keep him there and be patient/realisitc. He was one of the worst players in baseball last year, but the skill set is still worth cultivating.

He's also a guy that should not be traded. His value is in the dumpster but there's potential to cause a lot of regret if he goes to an organization that knows how to fix him. I'd bet that more teams than we'd think would love to snag him on the cheap from the Reds.

Santiago is dependable. He’s good defensively with some pop to his bat. He’s a former all star for Toronto. The Reds are also on the hook for $15 million per season w Candellario and he WILL play, no one is taking his contract off our hands. Marte, with last season’s swoon and this recent poor showing in the WL makes him the third wheel. I wouldn’t be shocked (or mad for that matter) to see his name listed in a trade package for an OF bat, where we are embarrassingly thin. We even have Collier knocking on the door, and he plays 3B as well iirc?

In September of 2023 he was on fire! three doubles, three HR's, thirteen RBI's, .387 batting average in 75 at bats.

Since then he has fell flat on his face. I'm not ready to trade him yet. But wow it sounds like he needs to start at double A and get some work in. Who knows? Perhaps he was just a flash in the pan?

Seems to be that simple. No PEDs = dude might never be a Red we give a shit about. We'll see if he ends up a career minor leaguer for the most part or not.
