That's exactly what you're saying. Just get some guys that can do those things because it doesn't matter if they need to know who rushes, who drops, who covers, who shows blitz and drops off, who blitzes, whether it's man or zone, what cover scheme does the back end play, etc etc.
You saying scheme shmeem, is literally one of the most ignorant things someone can say when talking about putting 11 guys on the field and expecting them to compete and succeed.
Absolutely outrageous, with zero awareness or any semblance of reality.
dont care what the "scheme" may or not be ..players that are not athletic, smart and that dont hustle, etc will not be successful with any coach or any scheme that may or may not be utilized..furthermore..and specific to schemes .... no coach .. in the NFL..in this day and age.. has a scheme set in concrete..we see variations on a philosophy...get current

2 Myles Garrets
2 Vita Veas
3 Fred Warners
2 Sauce Gardners
2 Kyle Hamiltons
..and just said "go play, guys!" just to see what happened?
Wouldn't work. Example the Carlos Dunlap Eagles game. Dunlap was racking up pressures but because he wasn't maintaining lane integrity he was allowing the QB to rush right by him.

But that example is just 1 Carlos Dunlap with 0 Fred Warners behind him instead of 3, and not playing next to 2 Vita Veas. I'm talking a full 11 man squad of peak All-Pro and probable future HoF players.

That's right, because sometimes the best plan... is no plan at all!

With no scheme you would have 2 or 3 All-Pro players attacking the same gaps, following the same motions, or leveraging the same direction in coverage. It would look like a bad high school defense.

I mean, they're still All-Pro players with a brain and common sense. They know how to communicate. Just because you don't have a DC and no defined scheme doesn't mean all 3 Fred Warners are going to line up on top of each other at the center of the field and leave the outside completely uncovered or 2 Vita Veas are both going to try to rush the same gap and collide. Lol
I'm not saying they'd be a well-oiled machine or be winning any battles through disguises or anything like that. I am just curious how much of that loss they'd be able to overcome by just being outright objectively significantly better than their opponents.

Of course a player must be able to think to employ the scheme.
The best hustler I ever saw in stripes was t Mays and he was a great tackler often times "blowing up" his own players. If he could have played within the scheme he would have been great.

I still wonder a bit about if his career would have been any different if he was drafted as a LB from day 1.

Taylor Mays was just hired by the Washington Huskies to be their Safeties coach.

A scheme would be necessary regardless. If they weren't given one, they would have to develop one themselves. The simplest thing they could do is play cover 1 every down but then you still have the question of what their run fits are. Offenses would just run pick routes, drags and crossers to take advantage of them.
Playing zone without a scheme would be effectively impossible. They wouldn't have any checks or adjustments to take advantage of if the offense overloads them to a side. Now, these guys would probably know some checks/adjustments to make but at that point they are developing their own scheme again.
They would get their asses kicked for a while until they figured out the finer details, I think.
