Undersized Edge guys at 17 ?
#1
In this scenario Carter , Graham , Mykel Williams, and Walter Nolan are all gone. The Bengals decide to go for an edge over the NT in Kenneth Grant. My question is would the Bengals finally be willing to draft a smaller type edge guy at 17 ? In my lifetime they’ve typically gone for the bigger 4-3 ends Dunlap, Michael Johnson, Will Clarke , Margus Hunt , Myles Murphy ect. We had the Nolan Smith vs. Myles Murphy debate before. Looking at who’s available at 17th James Pearce Jr. is intriguing to me because he’s has the length at 6’5, plays in the SCC but weighs in at only 243. Then you have Mike Green who’s a small school guy at 6’3 250 played well at the senior bowl practices and had 17 sacks. Then you have Jalon Walker from Georgia at 6’2 245lbs whose pro comp is Nolan Smith ironically. Thoughts on these players at 17 and if you think the Bengals will be willing to draft them.

Is Kennard the EDGE from South Carolina in this Draft? Really liked watching this guy rush the passer last season.

I like the idea of drafting an End who is just good at rushing the passer regardless of size. We all see drafting and using size as part of
the equation might not be a good idea. Green is from a small school on top of being small though. Would be all for Jalon Walker even if
Kenneth Grant is my favorite pick for us at this moment.

Yes Kennard is in this draft listed at 6’4 248 looks like he’s ranked between 14th -18th in terms of DE rankings just looking at a few websites not saying they’re accurate. I think my favorite might be Mykel Williams even tho I don’t think he’ll be there at 17. I’m with you tho I’m leaning towards Grant probably if Williams isn’t there. I heard Nolan might have character concerns even tho I don’t know what they are just makes me gushy after Burton. Deep draft for DE and DT versus last year so we should have good options regardless.

I don't think Pearce qualifies as "undersized" - he's just skinny right now. Out of all of them, Pearce would be my choice because of his tools and his pressure rate in college. I think he's a guy that can step in immediately on passing downs.

I put him in there because I can’t remember the last time the Bengals drafted a DE of his weight. Agree on Pearce tho has length ,big school production plus I feel like pass rush is a natural thing and prefer guys who actually show they can rush in college.

I feel that if all of those prospects are off the board, something fell to the Bengals that they should run to the podium for.

Leaning into a area that is being picked bare, as opposed to taking advantage to what opportunities it presents seems like an idea I am not in favor of.

Maybe that scenario lands then Tyler Warren, Malaki Starks, or Will Johnson?

Cool Lone Bengal. Between 14th and 18th seems really low to me for Kennard. Dude was the best player on the field every time I watched
South Carolina and they were really competitive against some damn good teams. If we can get Kennard in the mid rounds, sign me up, if we
go End early I am with you on Mykel Williams if he somehow falls to 17. Grant I think is the most likely without the character concerns that
Nolen and Pearce evidently have.

Also like Jalon Walker if Grant and Mykel Williams are gone.

Nice having a deep DL class right when we need to upgrade ours big time. Go Guard in FA and DL in the Draft and we are sitting nice if the
players live up.

Not at 17, but David Walker Central Arkansas is a 6' 1/2" 267 lb. wrecking ball DE. Doubt he's still there at 81,

This draft is definitely a lot different from last years which was loaded with offensive talent at quarterback , offensive tackle and wide receiver. Definitely rooting for offensive guys to go before us.

I'd say the last small DE we drafted was Joseph O.

As to the OP: Of the choices I'd go Walker. He can play standing up on 1st and 2nd downs then put his hand in the dirt on 3rd down

Thanks for the info on Kennard I’ll keep an eye out for him I don’t watch a ton of college football so I don’t have an opinion yet. I just study hard before the draft just haven’t gotten to him yet. My guess would be it’s a super deep class at DE plus it’s early ,combine hasn’t happened so things will change. Daniel Jeremiah is one of the guys opinion’s I value considering he was an NFL scout who still has many ties to the league . In Jeremiah’s 1st top 50 players he has 9 edge defenders.
1. Abdul Carter
2. Jalon Walker
3. Mykel Williams
4. James Pearce
5. Mike Green
6. Shemar Stewart
7. Donovan Ezeiruaka
8. Jack Sawyer
9. Josaiah Stewart

I agree I think Pearce Jr. is gonna be a stud and he would fit nicely on our D.

Only guy I think we’ve draft similar in size would be Carl Lawson 6’2 260 ?

Yup so the odds are very slim.
