Urgency

Zac Taylor, the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, has emphasized a sense of urgency to win and make changes to the team.

Taylor has said that he needs to make coaching changes and create a winning plan.
Taylor has said that he needs to ensure the team re-signs core players in free agency and drafts well.
Taylor has said that he needs to find the best way to get players ready for Week 1.
Taylor has said that he needs to lead the way and create a sense of urgency in the team.

Duke Tobin asked if Joe Burrow's outstanding season has heightened urgency of franchise to win a Super Bowl: "Urgency is as high as it could get. That's every off season, though. When you're a bad football team trying to get to the competitive level, there's high urgency. When you're a what I consider a high level football team, and that's what I consider us. You guys can scoff at it, but I consider us a very high level football team. Yes, there's a lot of urgency there as well, and so I haven't been a part of an off season that's not urgent. We're trying to maximize our guys, and when you have Joe Burrow, you're trying to fit it around them and give him the best chance to have a Hall of Fame career, and he's certainly capable of that."

————————

The season starts now. The outlook wouldnt be grim, if it was just Chase, tee or Trey… but it’s all three. It’s going to cause indecisiveness with FA about to open (already enough holes), and with focus on the upcoming draft next month.

I don’t care (I do, but I just saw the mavericks trade Luca) what they decide to do. Have a plan, execute it. If it’s run it back with the core, then get it done, then you know what you have to work with with less financial resources. If you want to trade them for assets (drafting is a question mark, but let’s play it out), at least you know what additional holes you have to fill prior to FA and can allocate time correctly in the draft.

Figure it out, one way or another. If “the big 3” are hamstringing you from a negotiation standpoint, move on and figure it out. Rip the band-aid off. Joe will be mad, and others, but he will get over it.

It came to mind after.

Eagles signed Barkley to an extension and brought back Baun.

Chiefs decided to trade All-Pro G, Joe Thuney.

Different directions, but it was decisive… good/bad/indifferent.

Nice thread Bengalbug. Yes, the time is to make some choices. Ja'Marr is the sure thing, give him what he deserves and then he is in
the fold and you have the best WR in the NFL to go along with arguably the best QB. Trey has a lot of value in a trade coming off being
the season leader in Sacks and he is getting older. Tee has value, but not as much as Trey because of his injury history and Tee is young
so it wouldn't be a bad idea to try and work out a deal while he is on the Tag.

Lots to think on here but the no brainer is just to pay Ja'Marr his 40 mil per year and see what options we have with Trey notably.

I never loved these sorts of vague statements from head coaches. I remember Marvin Lewis had a point of emphasis each year. One year it was just "Now". How is that helpful to the players. It isn't inspirational or educational. And "urgency" is one that particularly rubs me the wrong way. That is like putting your baggage off on the players. Show them that you act decisively and quickly and they might acquire those traits but telling them "urgency" is the theme?

I do like him saying they need to work like hell though. That's more specific and can help set the tone.

Today is the day as tomorrow the negotiations can officially start with FAs. Gotta know what $ you have available so they need to quit sitting on their hands and get the deals done (re-signing or trades).
Chase is now gonna want at least 41/year so the price isn’t getting lower.
Trade Trey if you have to but be prepared to sign replacements for him - it will take more than one guy.

But yes the OP is correct - make your decisions and continue to build this team.

Should add decisiveness after urgency as well.

The longer they wait the more it affects other decisions that have to be made.

Tee should have been extended or traded in 23!

Chase should have been signed last offseason after the Jefferson deal.

Hendrickson should have been signed or traded in February.

Free agency hasn't even started yet and most teams  are done with the first tier of free agency. Yet the Bengals are stuck wondering what could have been.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

Yep. Let's see what happens today. As you shown, Tee was on a private jet to Cincy yesterday, so it sounds like his extension is happening
first, then Ja'Marr's. Would be nice if these got done and then we can focus on FA and be urgent about getting at least one Guard and DL
help. I think Trey will be back but would like another End to replace Sam. We need a 3-tech to replace Rankins and maybe even BJ Hill.

Something like Fries, James Daniels, Jonathan Allen, Milton Williams, Josh Sweat FA...
