Fifty

Years

Still feels like only a couple of decades ago. LOL I was seven at this time 50 years ago, practicing every Reds batting stance and swing next to my bed before going to sleep every night. I even perfected the stances of the backups like Bill Plummer, Dan Driessen, Terry Crowley and Merv Rettenmund. Truly one of the greatest teams of all-time.

I grew up following the Big Red Machine. My dad said there would never be as good as team in my lifetime. I am in my 60's now and he was right.

During the summer, Marty and Joe were seemingly on everyone's back yard radio.

Oh the memories

All the upstairs windows open, 3 or 4 fans blowing, Marty and Joe on the radio. Me trying to stay awake for late west coast Dodgers game.

And this one belongs to the Reds.

1975? Oh yes, I remember like it was yesterday. That was the second year I ever went to live games at Riverfront Stadium. At the time I didn’t understand I was seeing the greatest team in baseball history play in front of my own eyes — but it sank in. The year before I was in the stadium the day Hank Aaron hit #714 off Jack Billingham to tie Babe Ruth — and every Reds fan in the stadium was proud of Hank. I will never forget where I was when Hank hit #715 against the Dodgers’ Al Downing. I was at my aunt‘s house in Portsmouth. As a point of trivia, Al Downing was in spring training with the Reds the following season but did not make the team.

Sorry, Vin Scully, but Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall were the best radio announcers in all of baseball.

My step-mom was a big fan. She would put the game on TV and mute it, while listening to Marty and Joe on the radio. She was a member of Rosie Reds and always had opening day tickets to the game, which she always attended and had a blast (all except the 1996 opening day, which devastated her).
