What's everyone's take on Shemar Stewart ? Is he a good option @ 17 or no ?
Here's the NFL sites take:
S. Stewart edge Texas A & M 6'5" 267 lbs. 6.41 rating
Stewart is carved from granite, possessing a rare blend of traits, explosiveness and untapped upside. He’s long and sudden off the snap but hasn’t learned to weaponize his hands to control the point of attack and bypass protection with go-to moves. His bull-rush compresses the pocket off the edge, and he’s too athletic for guards when reduced inside. He can be very disruptive in both phases but requires additional training to start converting his opportunities into finishes. The lack of production relative to the traits is a concern; still, players who move like him are highly coveted. While the boom-or-bust label might be in play, it feels like a matter of time before it all starts to click at a high level.

I have been comparing Shemar Stewart to Myles Murphy.
Murphy, like Stewart, had work needing to be done to improve his pass rush and be consistent.
Difference is Murphy had 17.5 sacks across 3 seasons, Stewart only 4.5.
And Murphy played 38 games to Stewart's 37.
Stewart's also been compared to guys like Jadeveon Clowney from a ceiling perspective, but Clowney too was safer of a prospect coming of college than Stewart.
Clowney has gone to average "just" 7.0 sacks a season in his 11-year NFL career. But a 1st rounder, especially early 1st rounder, is expected to be higher than that typically.
Stewart is too much of a project for me to gamble on at 17, personally.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs
Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.
Sorry for Party Rocking!

Please no. Even now Mims is a below average RT and we're betting on upside after a rookie year that he looked average. (Not Bengals average, league average) We all know about Myles Murphy as an athletic project. Before him we took Dax Hill as a safety project based on him being an athletic slot corner.
The Bengals have a horrible record in developing athletes. Horrible Horrible. Horrible.

If we had the old coaches....no.
But with new coaches...maybe.

Having traits and athletic ability is great, especially when it confirms what has been seen in the game footage and on the stat sheets. However in Stewart's case, he looks like a tremendous risk in the first round, as after seeing his testing numbers you really have to wonder why the lack of production.
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

I am a hard pass on Stewart and M. Williams.
Not even on my board.
We don't have to take an end at #17. Green is an acceptable alternative. So is taking Walker/Warren/Johnson/W. Campbell if they drop, staying put and taking Emmanwori/Loveland/J. Campbell/Starks, or teading back and taking a DT or Jackson/Zabel.
I'd be confortable with any of those moves.

The thing about Shemar he's just not a good athlete, he's arguably the best ever at the position.
If he had 7-8 sacks a year he's easily in the top 10. Adain Hutchinson had 4.5 sacks in his first 3 years in college. That's the same number as SS.
I'd be down with him at 17 bit I like shiny stuff.

I really like him, wxtremely athletic, moving up the board for sure, we need more versatile DE, edge rushers in this group give us little with the run, but not sure any i take him 17, he be my trade back pick and get extra pick

I'm very "on the fence" about him but, like it said his physical traits are hard to ignore.
But the thing to me is this - Who knows what's going to happen with Trey? And if he ends up not being a DE for us this season ummm... I don't have a lot of faith in Murphy or any of the others behind him. Hubbard is gone and I'm just not sure we're not going to be forced into a position where we almost have to get pass rushers at the top of the draft?
Stewart, Ezeiruaku, Pearce Jr.,and Sawyer are probably among the ones available at 17. And I'm just not sure going in whatever other position direction (TE,S,CB,WR) at 17 and relying on an edge in the 2nd round or later is a good strategy?
Hell even if Jalon Walker happens to still be available at 17 (I doubt it) I wouldn't be opposed to taking him.
I just strongly feel we have to get a lot better on the Dline.

His ceiling is here....
...and his floor is all the way down here.
Stewart may be the most glaring example of "Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" in NFL draft history.

Sounds a lot like Myles Murphy but without as much production. Stewart makes sense, but I think we need a proven producer. Mike Green
has produced and produced at a high level getting sacks and pressures, but he also has character concerns. Same with James Pearce.
Emmanwori is sounding more and more like the most safe pick we can make at 17 IMO.

My gut instinct is to pass on Shemar but honestly I can’t make up my mind on him. He’s the definition of boom or bust. The lack of sack production is an obvious concern. On top of that, he has a problem with tackling/finishing plays. He’s a guy who is always ‘almost’ there, always just a step too late.
However I watch the tape and I see why scouts are intrigued. He plays hard and has a high motor, which is interesting considering that having a high motor and low sack numbers don’t usually go hand in hand. He did however have 33 hurries last year so there maybe some validity to being disruptive but not showing on the stat sheet. And I’m not one to put a lot of stock in combine numbers but his strength and athleticism pop on tape. He is a very talented project in my opinion. In the end, I just think he needs a lot of refining and Al Golden has a lot on his plate already. With our track record lately and the other talent that is likely to be on the board, I think he’s just too risky.

Well for a team that needs better tackling and position awareness these are areas where he struggled some with, i think #17 is a bit high, i take Starks over him but I would not pick either that high, Stewart is a freak of nature but again don;t think i take him at #17 either, i love a trade back and hope Stewart slides pick him plus extra pick

Hear what you're saying and don't disagree
There's been many good athletes at many different positions, WR comes to mind quickly, that just don't have good football instincts. Don't possess the football killer instinct. And in some cases I believe just don't really have a true "love for the game". They can jump high and run fast with quick reflexes etc. But they're just not really cut out for the gridiron.
Perhaps he's one of these? We probably don't need another project that may of may not develop. (MURPHY)

I like both Starks and Emmanwori, I just don't know if either will be there at 17 if anything. Starks had a bad combine but we all know that
at times doesn't matter, in the end the play on the field is what matters. All for trading back and adding a pick, there are a lot of questions
with whoever we pick and staying at 17 is also a gamble. More picks to hit on players is a good gamble a lot of the time.

Andrew Billings turned out to be a pretty good pro. It took him 3 years or so to really take off.
Margus Hunt wound up having some quite good years in Indianapolis after moving from edge to DT and being schemed to rush from over the center. It took a position change, scheme change, and 4 years or so for him to take off.
I could see Stewart's career arc being similar to those two. While he shouldn't be an abject bust, I don't think it's unreasonable to call him a project. I'm for taking a more polished DL at 17 if that's the way they go. Come to think of it, Michael Johnson and Carl Lawson were late bloomers too. Maybe that wasn't their fault.
You can see a distinct pattern where the Bengals have clearly valued prototypes over football players at the edge position. Will they ever self evaluate and change their processes? Or are they like a human version of Space Invaders who will just keep doing the same thing over and over again...

I hope they pass on Stewart….
Keep an eye on his counterpart.
