NFL Owners Approved New Rules 2025
#1
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-owners-approve-big-rule-changes-for-2025-kickoff-and-overtime-to-be-modified-tush-push-ban-tabled/

Quote:Both teams will now be guaranteed a possession during overtime in the regular season,

Quote:Under last year's rule, the touchback was at the 30-yard line, but starting with the 2025 season, the touchback will be moved out to the 35-yard line.

Quote:With owners approving the expansion of replay assist, five new penalties can now be overturned by the booth: hitting a defenseless player, face mask, horse-collar tackle, tripping and roughing/running into the kicker.

Quote:The owners have voted to trim that number down to 21 days, which means the NFL can now wait longer before deciding whether to flex a Thursday game.

Quote:If you love throwback jerseys, then you're going to love this new policy: NFL teams can now wear their throwback or alternate uniforms a total of four times per season.

Quote:The chain gang could soon be going extinct. The NFL announced that the league will use Sony's Hawk-Eye technology as the primary method for measuring first downs in 2025.

Tush push and changes to the playoff format were tabled for now.  The next league meeting is May 20-21 where they might be addressed again.

Touchback at 35 now? Thumbs down
5 new penalties for review now? Thumbs up as long as they are fast about reviewing them (unless they reduce commercials to compensate, big W then haha)

It seems the dynamic kickoff wasn't very dynamic last year so yet another change.   I'm not a big fan of it either.  I did like that Charlie Jones 100 yard return last year though.  :)

Kickers can prep the k-balls the day before now which will probably extend kickers range and if you start on the 35 yard line from a touchback that means a team might just need 22 yards to get to the 43 to attempt a 60 yarder.

35 yard touchback seems insane

This puts a premium on kickers who can drop it inside the 10 without hitting the end zone. That will really mess with field goals IMO. I know McMaybe said he kicks a 30-yarder as hard and with the same motion that he kicks a 55-yarder. To now have to take some off of the kick to keep from having a touchback can't be an easy transition. I could almost see a team using a punter to make the kickoff so the kicker can concentrate on putting it through the uprights.

Idk, I kinda like that they're pressing teams to field playable KOs. At least now there's a greater chance of something exciting to happen, be it a big return, a great tackle, possible turnover. Anything was better than that boring 5 seconds of basically dead air sandwiched between egregious TV timeouts that we had with all of the touchbacks.

Nothing wrong with finding a way to put some of the risk/reward value back into special teams plays. A great opportunity for back of the roster guys to do something impactful to help their team. Excitement = Drama = More people staying in their chairs to watch the play.

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

I get what they are trying to do with it.   Like i said the dynamic kickoff wasn't so dynamic last year so they NFL made the change to try to force the issue more.  I just feel like spotting a touchback at the 35 gives the offense too much of an advantage. Yes I know the idea is to discourage that and force the kicker to try and put the ball between the 20 and end zone.  I guess if teams continue to kick into or out of the end zone they'll move it to the 40 next year.   Tongue

You know what was a pretty dynamic kickoff? Kickoffs before they moved the ball forward which let every random jagoff reliably kick it out the back of the endzone. The ball only came out to the 20 on a touchback, and at the very least when they still had 2 man wedges instead of none. Electric guys like Hester and Cribbs who just can't exist in today's NFL.

2007-2010 there were 135 total return TDs.
2021-2024 there were 45 total return TDs.

So now they want kick returns? Then go back to the old rules with the ball kicked off from the 30.
