Dalton Risner: "Would LOVE to be a Bengal"
#61
Too bad the Bengals are okay with bad play at guard and scoff at the idea of paying a competent guard good money.

The fact that they've held this stance for as long as they have is remarkable.  It would make sense if they actually knew how to draft ones that can contribute....

Maybe the 2 go hand in hand. THey have drafted Zeitler in round 1. There were 24 drafts in since the year 2000, and we only drafted 1 OG in first 32 picks and none in firdst 25 picks. It i sno secret draft success is a lot higher in round 1, it is where the largest pool of all pro's come from and each round after, success and great success regress.

The Bengals definitely need to hit at guard in the draft of free agency. But, the biggest need is DE/Edge because Trey is in last year of his contract. To me is second, they need an upgrade of Geno and Stone is also in last year of his contract. If they think a stud pass rushing 2 way DT is available at 17 (they have to consider it).

I think the Bengals will ignore guard until round 3 at the earliest because of other greater needs or BPA.

I disagree entirely because the entire goal of free agency and the draft should be to keep Burrow protected, especially when it only requires acquiring, via free agency and the draft, two guards that can pass protect and hopefully open some holes for Brown.

Burrow has proven that he can be the best quarterback in the league when he is given protection, but we just have never given him consistent protection and he has still produced.

Priority number two should be improving the pass rush because that makes the secondary's life a lot easier. I've called for Walter Nolen in the first round because he can draw blocks off the ends and blitzing backers, and then a defensive end and then a safety. This draft is so weak at safety that I think we're wasting a pick taking one early, even Emmanwori.

If I'm Zac, I'm telling Al Golden we need to stop the run and rush the quarterback before anything else because that keeps the offense in 2nd and 3rd and longs and also makes the secondary's job easier, and one of Golden's strengths is coordinating defenses to fit his players' strengths and he doesn't try and fit a square peg in a round hole.

It is just my opinion, yours differs and that is what makes the world go round and round. I feel too many get locked into their own answers to fix the team and then get upset if Bengals go a different direction.

For me, I think all of the positions are needs. If they draft a guard in round 1 and disagree with my plan, that is great and I hope they draft the right guard to be great quickly. In the end the team needs to pick the right guy to make our team better. The early round picks need to be winners, not misses. They could pick a DE at #17 and him be a bust so my plan on position to draft first based on major need would not be improved.

I hope we all agree, it is not easy to predict the next start after round 1 nor draft. But, our FO needs to have a great draft every year by fuguring it out.

If they adopt your plan, hope he is a stud and helps protect JB for the next 10 years and helps us win a Super Bowl.

I respect your opinion, as well.

I'm hoping that they sign two free agents at guard (or one, at the very least), and then draft one (second round?) and then using the rest of the picks and free agency to shore up the defense.

We can beat anyone with Burrow because we can outscore anyone if we protect him, but we can't beat anyone if we can't score.

I agree 100%. You win by winning in the trenches. We have not run the ball well or protected JB the past few years. We also had a very bad defense, we need more talent in defense whether through FA or the draft. JB is awesome and I agree give him an extra half second and he becomes unstoppable.

Booker has his questions as well, but I would be fine with him as the pick. Just think we could get a Guard just as good in the 2nd or 3rd.

As far as Safety, I don't know if we could get a talent like Emmanwori later, he is a rare talent. I like Xavier Watts of course, but who knows
if he even makes it to our 2nd round pick.

And Ford is apt to be playing tackle at any time when one of the bookends gets hurt. Don't get me wrong, I want to upgrade Volson as well, but we can't cut him until we have something better to replace him with should several linemen get hurt at the same time.

Yes, have to have a replacement in place before you go cutting people.

Is he a quality starter? No.

But I'd feel comfortable with him being a backup on this team. He has 3 years starting experience at this point.

I think Volson would be good depth myself, especially if Peters can coach him up. I know we are sick of him as a starter but it is getting
a little out of hand when people don't think Volson can even be decent depth under a new OL coach.

You don't feel Ford and Patrick would be better depth than Volson at this point?
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs

Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Volson keeps stepping on/tripping his own teammates feet. If you haven't developed awareness after 50 games, you're probably not suddenly going to magically do so in your 51st game at the age of 27.

It's bad enough to struggle yourself, but then you're taking down others with you.

We all know grades aren't the end-all-be-all, but he's put out a 0.0 before. Sometimes it's best for both parties to just completely cut ties.

I'm just saying, it's pretty telling if you get benched in favor of Ford.
To me, Ford is ahead of Volson at this point.
Ford also offers more versatility than Volson.

In my perfect world, Risner and a draft pick would start with Ford and Patrick depth.
Volson would be cut.

After 3 years, he hasn't really improved.
2022 - 5 sacks, 38 total pressures allowed on 729 pass block snaps
2023 - 5 sacks, 38 total pressures allowed on 730 pass block snaps
2024 - 6 sacks, 43 total pressures allowed on 662 pass block snaps

I'm fine letting him compete with Ford and Patrick and the worst of the 3 gets cut, but I personally don't want any of them starting.
