I’d take Leon Hall over a couple of those CB’s.

Brian "Puddins" Simmons, really? I would put LeClair over him.

I'm 52 years old, became a fan in !979. there's a few I would add over yours:
TE: Dan Ross over Germaine Gresham- Ross played in a Running league and still was a solid option for Kenny
LB- Jim LeClair over Carl Zander- LeClair was just a force inside
CB- Leon Hall over Terrance Newman- Newman wasn't dominate with us(Cowboys), Hall was a solid Corner.
Solid list though!!! Montoya was the one guy I think we blew it on in PlanB FA!! gambled and lost.

How are you going to do Pete Johnson like that, or Danny Casanova, or Bob Trumpy.. or Jim Breech? Lots of good names on your list, but it suffers from recency bias.
Even McPherson.... pfffftttt. not yet.
Quote:In his 14 NFL seasons, Breech made 243 of 340 field goals (71.4%), 517 of 539 extra points (95.9%), and scored 1,246 total points. His 1,151 points with the Bengals are a franchise record. He is second all-time scoring in consecutive games with 186 consecutive games, and he was a perfect 9 for 9 in overtime field goals, an NFL record. Breech played in 9 postseason games during his career. In all of them combined, he missed just 2 field goals out of 11 attempts and never missed an extra point. Breech also played in Super Bowl XVI and Super Bowl XXIII, was perfect in both games, not missing a field goal or extra point in either one. In Super Bowl XXIII, he kicked 3 field goals and scored 10 of Cincinnati's 16 points in the game. When his third field goal gave the Bengals a 16–13 lead over the San Francisco 49ers with just 3:10 left in the game, it appeared there was a strong possibility he would become the first kicker ever to win the Super Bowl MVP award. However, the 49ers ended that chance by driving 92 yards and scoring the winning touchdown with 34 seconds left in the game. In 1999, he was inducted into the University of California Athletic hall of fame

Leon over all, save for the first two.

Breech is the second or third worst long-time starting K in our history (even below Fat Randy), only Rackers (and he technically wasn't long-term. Pelfrey would be the other one) is worse.
You need to compare them to their peers in terms of percentage, makes, clutch factor, etc. Breech was never top 10 in anything, outside of maybe 1 year (I can't remember exactly, but I wrote a post like this a year or two ago), he was awful compared to his peers. He just kicked for us for a long time, that's all.
It's like Mason Crosby: the guy was a shitty K for SO LONG, people think he was great because GB decided to keep him around. Look at this numbers when compared to his peers, they are not great at all.
By the numbers, Shayne is our best K ever, but Evan will surpass him in a couple of years unless something catastrophic happens.

Ok, here’s my attempt. I’ve tried to base it across the entire history so many of these I haven’t actually properly watched play.
QB (3) Burrow, Anderson, Esiason
RB (4) Dillon, Brooks, Pete Johnson, Paul Robinson
WR (6) Chase, AJ, Chad, Curtis, Collinsworth, Pickens
TE (3) Trumpy, Holman, Eifert
OL (9) Munoz, Anderson, Whitworth, Walter, Montoya, Kozerski, Latham, Bob Johnson, Braham
DE (5) Edwards, Bacon, Dunlap, Hendrickson, Smith
DT (4) Atkins, Krumrie, Reid, Reader
LB (6) Williams, Spikes, Bergey, McClair, Simmons, Francis
CB (6) Riley, Parrish, Hall, Joseph, Breeden, Adam Jones
S (4) Fulcher, Casanova, Bates, Nelson
ST (3) Breech, McInally, Harris
So who have I missed?

71.4 % career FG % sustained over 14 years, 95.9% on PAT. 9 for 11 in Post season games, and perfect in two Super Bowls. I realize Evan was injured last year, but his performance has gone steadily south since his first year.

Dan Ross at TE over Eifert imo.
Ross had 263 receptions as a Bengal. Oft injured Eifert had 185.

Thanks for starting the thread. I considered doing it a couple times this year, but then talked myself into educating myself on all the players at every spot and making informed choices, and it was too much work, so I wimped out. :)
Plus, deciding how many to take at each spot, what the base is gonna be (3 WE, 2 RB, 2 TE, 43, 34, nickel, etc) is tough. Or do you pick a 53 that can do it all?
Anyway, you have encouraged me to go for it but I will just post my initial thoughts and reserve the right to switch later upon getting better info.
Off the top of my head:
QB (3): Anderson, Esiason, Burrow
RB (3): Brooks, Dillon, Mixon
FB (1): P. Johnson
WR (6): C. Johnson, Green, Chase; Curtis, Collinsworth, Pickens
TE (3): Trumpy, Holman, Ross
OT (3): Munoz, Willie; Whitworth
OG (3): Montoya, Lapham, Zeitler
C (2): Johnson, Braham.
-------------
DE (4): Hendrickson, Dunlap; Bacon, Edwards
DT/NT(4): Atkins, Krumrie; Reid, Peko
LB (5): Williams, LeClar, Burfict; Bergey, Francis
CB (5): Riley, Parrish, Hall; Jones, Breeden
S (4): Fulcher, Cassanova; Bates, Nelson
--------
PK (1): Breech
P (1): McInally
LS (1): Harris
PR/KR: Parrish & Jones (no spots added)
That is 24 on O and 22 on D. 3 ST.
I am light at TE, OL, DE, DT, & CB. And there is no true backup SS on that squad. Nor a true slot WR. Both Bacon & Reid have inside/out versatility.
I tried to grab at least 1 LB who could feasibly play every pissible LB role:
43 MLB: LeClair, Bergey, Burfict
34 ILB/Nickel ILB: same
34 ROLB: Williams
34 LOLB: Francis
43 OLB: Williams, Burfict
Probably need another LB as well
Pro Bowlers/All Pros not in my 49.
All Pro: Robinson (RB), Ambrose (CB), Lewis (P/QB). 1 each.
Pro-Bowlers not In:
3x: QB Dalton
2x: QB Palmer, RB Robinson, TE Gresham
1x: QB Blake; RB Green, RB R. Johnson; FB Neal; WR Brown, WR Houshmandzadeh, WR Myers; TE Eifert; CB Ambrose, CB Thomas, CB James, CB O'Neal, PK Graham, P Huber, KR/DB Mack, ST/RB Peerman.
Highest Added Value not In:
#, Pos, Player, AV, Games, Seasons
1. QB Dalton, 100, 133, 9
2. QB Palmer, 74, 97, 7
3. RT Walter, 69, 166, 12
4. C/G/T Kozerski, 69, 172, 12
5. WR Brown, 64, 102, 7
6. RT Wilson, 63, 114, 8
7. RT Holland, 62, 119, 9
8. DE M. Johnson, 60, 141, 9
9. LT Mayes, 57, 110, 9
10. B. Williams, RG, 118, 8
11. DE Browner, 57, 127, 9
12. LLB Beauchamp, 56, 111, 8
13. MLB/LLB Maualuga, 56, 114, 8
14. LDE Geathers, 55, 152, 11
15. RILB Cameron, 55, 159, 11
16. WR Houshmandzadeh, 54, 105, 8
17. WR Scott, 54, 109, 7
18. RG Boling, 53, 111, 8
19. LG Fest, 53, 112, 8
20. WR Boyd, 53, 120, 8
21. DE Smith, 50, 111, 7
That is it above 50. Though AV rewards longevity. Though some guys had better AV/year or AV/game over shorter timeframes.
I will do 40s later.
I did not pick Scott or Brown because I already had 2 deep threats in Chase/Curtis, 2 big WRs in AJ/Pickens, and 2 route runners in Ocho/CC.
I will do some more research & come back. WR5 & WR6 were tough for me, as was P, and taking Bacon at DE, and the LB choices after Williams & LeClair. Everything else pretty straightforward.
And outside of Dalton/Palmer/Robinson, all our multiple PB guys are on, and I think QB4/QB5Cshould not make it,,and Robinson had 2 great years and that was baducally it.
No one else jumps out as getting robbed outside of the WR choices left off (Housh, Brown, Boyd, Scott, Tee), and there is tough comp there. Maybe I go 7.

Yeah I went back and forth on that one. Ross had the more sustained career but Eifert at his peak was some player. That 13 TD season in 2015 - and he missed games that year too.
I may have been subconsciously swayed by Eifert’s beer chugging capabilities though.
