The rules are simple... pick a conference and put together a 7 round mock draft with only the players from the conference you picked. Try not to reach or take a player strictly based on need... Do you best to combine the concepts of BPA and drafting for need. Have Fun!
Round 1:
Kenny Clark – DT – UCLA – 6’3” 310 lbs.
Clark is an impactful, run stuffing defender. However he can also produce a pass rush when needed. With 75 tackles, 11 TFL and 6 sacks last season, we are getting the strong DT to play with Atkins.
Round 2:
Scooby Wright – LB – Arizona – 6’1” 246 lbs
Wright is a tough player to project. He is coming off of an injury marred 2015, however in 2014 he was a force to be reckoned with. He has the power, strength and tenacity to be an elite run stuffing LB, and the quickness rush the passer. I see him as a poor man’s Luke Keuchly.
Round 3:
Max Tuerk – C – USC – 6’6” 285 lbs
Tuerk gives us the replacement we need at center. He has elite quickness and athleticism at the center position and is equally competent in run and pass blocking. His one knock at this point is that he does not possess top end strength. He has the frame and all of the natural gifts necessary to excel in this offense.
Round 4:
Cody Kessler – QB – USC - 6’1” 210 lbs
Let me preface this by saying that I believe that McCarron will not be a Bengal for the start of the 2016 NFL season… with that said, call on Kessler. Dalton 3.0 (McCarron was Dalton 2.0). Kessler is almost a carbon copy of our Red Rifle. I am confident that Kessler can be the backup QB of this team for a number of years.
Round 5:
Cayleb Jones – WR – Arizona – 6’3” 215 lbs.
Jones is a high upside type of WR that we have the luxury of taking this late in the draft. He showed great body control, above average hands, and a knack for finding the ball in the air. If he runs well at the combine he may not be available this late.
Round 6:
Reggie Gilbert – DE – Arizona – 6’3” 275 lbs
Gilbert is a relative unknown. Interestingly enough, he reminds me of a current Bengal, Wallace Gilberry. He has similar size and skill set. He can play as a DE for 2 downs and play DT as a pass rushing specialist. Expect Gilbert to push Hunt off of the roster this upcoming season.
Round 7:
Soma Vainuku – FB – USC – 5’11” 250 lbs
Vainuku is a versatile FB. We have Hewitt currently, but picking up a true FB would give Hewitt the opportunity to play more as a traditional TE. Vainuku is willing, and capable of running, blocking, catching and pummeling punt/kick returners on special teams. This is another luxury pick.
