It's basically the old squirting flower gag, but instead of spraying water it streams pepper spray

It's not too early.  They are up and active.  What's keeping you safe now is the fact that clowns are famous for their carpooling, which takes considerable time to go pick up each individual.

They are fanatical about it.  One time I saw 12 of them get out of one car!
