what affect do ties have on playoffs?

It's basically the same thing as a loss.

Just half of the percentage points of a loss. Ties suck, like kissing your sister. Yeah, you got some action, but no fruit going to mature from that action..

We'll find out once the Seahawks and redskins are in contention down the stretch.

The Bengals have 3.5 wins and 4.5 losses.
It can hurt or help depending on the rest of the season. It's just too bad it wasn't against an AFC team but then again it may be a good thing. Think of it like this, If the Steelers go 10-6 and the Bengals go 10-5-1, the Bengals have the better record.

Basically removes all tiebreakers.
If you're win heavy with a tie it is good. If you're loss heavy it is not so good.

It gives you an advantage in the loss column, but you of course have to match the other team's wins. It's vanilla pudding. Not a loss, but not a win. A tie is a 1/2 win. It will beat a 9-7 team out but lose to a 10-6 team if our record ends at 9-6-1

But since we already had 4 losses we're behind any team that has 4 losses or fewer. That currently puts us behinds Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Oakland, Denver, Kansas City, New England, Houston, Tennessee, Buffalo and Miami. Yes, that tie sucked bad. You can look at it like this: Say 9 wins get you in the playoffs. It might not, but let's say it will. With the tie we still need 6 more wins to have 9. That means we can only have two more losses. A record of 8-7-1 isn't going to get us in the playoffs unless for some reason that record will win the division, which it won't. So the Bengals are now in a situation where we really need to go 7-1 the rest of the way to end up at 10-5-1 to be fairly sure we'll have a playoff spot. If we go 6-2 the rest of the way and end with a 9-6-1 record we'll have the edge over 9-7 teams for a wildcard spot, but any 10 win team will move ahead of us. Each loss the rest of the way is a nail the coffin. Three more losses knocks us out of the playoffs for sure. Two more losses might knock us out. |
