In 1938 the All-Star Game was at Crosley Field. Lefty Gomez started for the AL, and Reds Johnny Vander Meer started for the NL. For 3 innings, Reds Vander Meer gave up no runs against this line-up. Kreevich, Gehringer, Averill, Foxx, Dimaggio, Dickey, Cronin, Lewis, Gomez. Pretty good scoreless pitching by Reds Vander Meer for 3 innings. Meanwhile, The Reds were scoring. Ernie Lombardi singled to knock in Mel Ott in the bottom of the 4th. Frank McCormick singled and scored when Leo Durocher bunted towards 3rd and an error by third baseman and an error by right fielder on this play caused both McCormick and Durocher to score on the bunt....The National League won 4 to 1 and the fans at Crosley Field came away seeing big day by some Reds players to beat AL.
In 1952, Crosley Field again brought a win for the NL. No Reds factored into the scoring or pitching, but big games by Pee Wee Resse and Enos Slaughter against Allie Reynolds, Mike Garcia and Satchel Paige pitching for AL.
In 1970, Riverfront Stadium had just opened in time for this. While Reds batters were struggling in this, Reds Jim Merritt pitched 2 scoreless 4th and 5th innings. The game went extra innings. In the bottom of the 12th, Pete Rose singled off Clyde Wright. Billy Grabarkewitz singled Pete to second. Jim Hickman singled to left and Amos Otis threw home as Pete Rose rounded third and headed for home......Ray Fosse stood way out in front of home plate blocking the plate....Pete Rose began to head first slide but seeing the plate blocked, crashed into catcher Ray Fosse....both lay on the ground near home, and the ball lay on the ground. Pete Rose standing up first was shook up himself..... Pete had scored and won the game....Fosse lay on the ground..... Leo Durocher ran out smiling to hug Pete Rose. The Cincinnati crowd erupted in a great roar and the brand new Riverfront Stadium was started with instant history.
In 1988, The AL won for the first time in Cincinnati. Not much action by Reds players in this one. More known for the media putting down fans for voting in Terry Steinbach of low batting average. Steinbach homered off Doc Gooden in the 3rd inning and sacrafice fly to left to score Dave Winfield in the 4th. The fans voted in the right player after all. AL won game 2 to 1.
and NOW....Bring on 2015....the 5th of the Cincinnati All-Star Games....Only the 5th.....Now in Great American Ball Park. Could it be like 1938, with Frazier of a Run or an RBI, and Chapman maybe getting the Save ???....we will see.
For Home Run Lovers, there have been only 3 in Cincinnati All-Star Game History....Jackie Robinson in 1952, Dick Dietz in 1970 and Terry Steinbach in 1988.
