2019 Draft: Tight Ends
#21
(01-04-2019, 11:34 AM)Au165 Wrote: I read a report from a scout who said he was severely overrated. Basically half his touchdowns came from one specific play where he'd charge the back of his line and act like he was blocking then come out the other side uncovered running free. That guy called him more of a 3rd or 4th round project.

I think he will be polarizing, one team could take him in the 1st and everyone be shocked or he could fall hard like a Billings where media like him more than teams.

You're referring to the Memphis game from this year regarding the 3 TDs, and yes I read the same. However, his production from the year prior shouldn't be discounted, and he had 11 TDs that year. He's a great red zone threat. He has also been pretty much universally considered a matchup nightmare. It's also expected he'll perform really well at the Combine like Howard did and his stock will rise because of that.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins

He didn't have 500+ yards in a season in college like Fant and Hockenson, but he did have ideal size and ran a 4.52 at nearly 250 lbs. That 40 time alone would make me do a double-take and make sure to run him through drills at his Pro Day.
It's a rather safe bet to get a TE from either Stanford or Iowa (at least nowadays).
And given Dalton's and Driskell's tendencies to throw high and struggles throwing accurately downfield, they need big guys with leaping ability that can make contested catches.
A guy like Hockenson or Kaden Smith would fit in well with this team IMO. Fant would too, but I'd prefer the Bengals address OL or LB in Rd 1.

Also, Albert Okwuegbunam from Missouri could actually be the first TE off the board. He has crazy size (6'5", 255 lbs), has had back-to-back 400+ yard 6+ TD seasons at Mizzou, and he's believed to not have tapped his potential yet like how OJ Howard was.

Great, another guy that it will take 3 years before we all learn to pronounce his name right... Hilarious

While Hockenson only has one good year of production compared to Fant's two, Hockenson actually outperformed Fant in 2018.
Fant - 518 yards, 7 TDs
Hockenson - 760 yards, 6 TDs

Every one will mention Hockenson`s receiving stats but his blocking in the ground game is what could get him into the first round.

I would be okay if the Cincinnati Bengals drafted two tight ends in the upcoming draft.

I'm taking it you meant two TE's ? I wouldn't mind going after a TE later on in the draft but I think we have much bigger needs early on.

The reason I said to instead of "two" I blame google voice chat!
Yes, I think Kroft is showing health issues.  Bottom line is that instead of Ross, the team should have drafted OJ Howard.  I think all the injuries at that position means two TE's this draft.  One fairly high and one day 3 that slips.

I like Nauta from UGA, think we could get him later. Also like CJ Conrad from UK.

I am a big fan of Jace Sternberger, dude is a threat and just said he was entering the draft.

832 Yards and 10 TDs this year.

Not sure where he goes but could be an option.

Also quick question, what rankings and sites are people using these days? CBS has gone downhill and Walter is Walter. Any other decent ranking sites

Yea hard to find much these days, was looking at Drafttek, CBS, Walter and a couple the other day and they have such wildly different rankings for a couple guys it is hard to get a good feeling on many of them.

CBS used to have a good site for draft rankings but they changed it up and it’s not as good now.

CBS was good back when they had Rob Rang and Dane Brugler. Both left there and went to NFLdraftscout.com, but after last year's draft, Dane Brugler joined The Athletic. Rob Rang still does rankings on NFLDraftScout though.

Im keeping my eye on this guy. Ive seen alot of people saying overall he's the best in the draft but he's a bit of a challenge within the locker room and comes off like a diva. I was able to mock him several times to us in the 3rd round.

Anybody else watch UC football?

Josiah Deguara popped out more than a few times this year. Redshirt junior but he graduated already so i think he will go into the draft. If he does I am all about getting the next good TE that comes out of UC.

Okwuegbunam is considered by some to be a first rounder.

The needs on day 1 and 2 I think are LB/Oline/CB, especially if Dennard leaves but honestly even if he doesn't we need to get depth and possibly plan to move on from Dre.

Just think...last year several of us declared that IF the Bengals drafted another CB in the first few rounds...  Oh, you know.. Hilarious

I would take him in round 2 in a heart beat.  Especially if the Bengals take White at #11 for MLB.
