Notable point, but the idea is a philosophical one. The question is: which came first, the organism that creates an offspring or an "offspring" devoid of a creative organism?

Chicken and egg is just easier to say.

This. I suppose it could be complicated by asking Which came first: The first egg laying species or the egg.

Chicken or egg is just a turn of phrase.
