Burkhead >Hill

If the coaches don't see this and use this - they are more stupid than I thought.

The guy has been as reliable in the pinch as we could ever hope for but have we seen enough to think he's really better as a full time guy?

This is a true story. Frankly I am very disillusioned with the people drafting these players. (Rhetorically) How many times has the FO passed on a player to draft someone else only to have the one they skipped have a great year for the team that actually drafted him? The Bengals seem ill equipped to draft well. The laws of chance award them a keeper every once in awhile though.

They draft well, but don't develop the talent, or they refuse to accept that another player is more productive than the one they decided to play before the start of training camp.

In 2010 we passed on Dez Bryant and took Gresham instead.
In 2012 we passed on DeCastro, traded down and took Zeitler. In this draft we also took Devon Still in the 2nd and passed on LB Levonte David, and we took Sanu in the 3rd while passing on WR TY Hilton.
In 2013 we passed on LeVon Bell and took Gio Bernard instead.
In 2013 we also selected Margus Hunt in the 2nd round passing on many other better players.

Of course hindsight might be 20/20, except that nobody except the Bengals placed Bernard ahead of Bell and many Bengals fans wanted Bryant over Gresham. We also wanted DeCastro over Zeitler.

I suppose you could look at a lot of teams and make these kinds of comparisons.  Honestly, though the DeCastro one really pissed me off.  He was being called the best guard to come out in a decade and we needed one badly with Bobbie Williams on the way out.  Alexander even conducted his pro day workout IIRC.

An article on the website said something to the effect of them wanting to draft a Big ten o-lineman early because John Cooper was scouting for them.  I still didn't think there was any way they could pass on a prospect like DD at a position of obvious need.

Burkhead is a solid RB but if teams saw enough film of him and game planned for him he would probably get injured.....

Hes solid, but making him the starter would be like making Christian McCaffrey a starter in the NFL... hes a third down specialist. McCaffrey is gonna get blasted in the NFL. Players are so much faster. EVERYBODYS FAST! McCaffreys sitting out a bowl game bc he knows he needs that first round contract and hes set. Getting hit by NFL players who are the best of the best is different than playing a few good teams in college.

Used periodically Burkhead is great, better than peerman. Its like saying Brian Leonard should have been a starter. He was great every now and then.....Love and miss him though.

Reports were that DeCastro interviewed poorly at the combine, and that hurt his draft stock.  He also wasn't as good as Zeitler his first few years.  He missed most of his rookie season with an injury, then knocked out Pouncey and Gilbert for the season in consecutive years with his poor play.  He blew out Pouncey's knee with a botched attempt at an illegal crack back block and broke Gilbert's leg when he was overpowered and dropped onto his leg while engaged.

Apparently the Steelers' ownership got over that disaster when they dished out a 10 mil per contract to him.

ThumbsUp Bingo!!!! I am not saying that Hill is the answer but I believe that Burkhead like Gio would be hurt a lot if asked to carry the load as a fulltime starter.

You can do this for all teams.. no team is perfect on drafting.. and most of the pundits  have praised how we have drafted pretty well over the last 5 to 6 years.

I know, but fans picked some better players in some of those years than the team did.

This team has done awesome drafting and to say otherwise is absurd. They cant coach that talent on the field but they sure can find it.

I could do this exact same thing with every team in the NFL.

Are you saying that in 2013 every team in the league had a RB better than Le'Veon Bell and let him drop to #48?

Then why does none of this awesome talent blossom under different coaches with different teams?

Of course we could do this for every team. I was simply illustrating some examples where fans and the team disagreed on the selections.

As far as RBs goes, at that time, the RB was considered a dime a dozen commodity. Bell was a better college RB than Gio was and this translated to be the same in the NFL.

Then why didn't you list all of the times when the fans were wrong?

The Bengals drafts have been widely praised every year but the production on the field, especially the last few years has been iffy. Hard to say whether the drafts have been over rated or the coaches haven't developed the players. I think the limited playing time for rookies hurts their development.  Practise is not the same speed as games. I think basically not playing that first year sets them back in getting up to game speed.

Of course Bodine blows this theory out of the water
