Hunter Biden faces 9 Felony Charges
#1
A California grand jury has charged Hunter Biden with 9 tax related felonies.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/07/politics/hunter-biden-criminal-case/index.html

Quote:
Hunter Biden has been charged in connection with a long-running Justice Department investigation into his taxes – the second criminal case that special counsel David Weiss has brought against President Joe Biden’s son.

The charges span nine counts, including failure to file and pay taxes; evasion of assessment; and false or fraudulent tax return. CNN was first to report a new criminal case had been filed.

The case was close to being resolved in July when a plea deal fell apart. The new tax case stems from Hunter Biden’s lucrative overseas business dealings, which are at the center of House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden.

Now, the president will be campaigning for a second White House term and fighting a Republican impeachment bid while his son fights to avoid prison in two criminal cases.

Hunter Biden’s lawyers did not immediately comment, and CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

According to court filings from the now-defunct plea deal, Hunter Biden repeatedly missed IRS deadlines to pay his federal taxes on time, and eventually owed about $2 million to the government. He paid the money back in 2021, with a loan from a friend.

Federal prosecutors have been scrutinizing Hunter Biden’s finances since 2018, and Trump-appointed US attorney David Weiss was designated special counsel in August.

The probe appeared to be winding down this summer when Hunter Biden agreed to plead guilty to two tax misdemeanors, and prosecutors would recommend no jail time. They also agreed that a gun charge would be dropped in two years if he stayed out of legal trouble.

But both proposed deals collapsed after scrutiny from a federal judge and disagreements over the fine print. Then Weiss indicted Hunter Biden in September on three charges related to his purchase of a gun from a shop in Delaware in 2018 at a time prosecutors say he was an illegal drug user. He has pleaded not guilty in the gun possession and false statements case.

Hunter Biden’s attorneys previously accused Weiss of “bending to political pressure” from Republicans and said that his actions “present a grave threat to our system of justice.”

One of the reasons Republicans have attacked Weiss is because of testimony from two IRS whistleblowers who were involved in the probe and said they witnessed political interference by the Justice Department. The whistleblowers said career IRS agents recommended felony tax charges against Hunter Biden in early 2022.

Weiss and Attorney General Merrick Garland have refuted the whistleblowers’ claims.

Hunter Biden made millions of dollars from private equity deals, corporate consulting and legal fees in Ukraine, China, Romania and other countries. Prosecutors previously said he had the money to buy luxury items like a Porsche and was warned about his looming tax bills by accountants and associates – but still missed the IRS deadlines.

House Republicans have zeroed in on many of these overseas deals as part of their own probes.

They’ve uncovered some evidence that Hunter Biden leveraged his father’s position to make money. But their impeachment inquiry is largely based on their unproven claims that Joe Biden was involved in “corrupt” business deals with his son.

To date, federal prosecutors have never offered any evidence backing up GOP claims that Joe Biden was in business with his son or abused his powers to enrich his family.

I personally would really like it if we used some of the prison space created from letting marijuna offenders off the hook to instead lock up wealthy well connected tax cheats.

I don't want HB, Jim or Joe Biden locked up. I would like to know if the POTUS was involved with his son with influence peddling with foreign countries. If so, I hope Joe Biden is impeached.

I also hope the IRS is paid back with interest all of the tax dollars Biden family members did not pay in taxes. The DOJ let the Burisma Hunter Biden Burisma taxes on 5 million dollars expire.

The DOJ was going to let Hunter 100% off the hook and not charge him in Delaware. But, 2 IRS whistleblowers (whose testimony has been validated over and  over again) came forward so Weiss offered HB a sweetheart deal that in the deal HB not only got a slap on the wrist, the Weiss DOJ was giving him immunity for any crimes HB had committed in the past.
But the judge, stopped it, otherwise the Biden DOJ would haves topped the HB investigation.

Now each day, Joe Biden lies are exposed on the campaign trail where he said the HB laptop was according to 51 former DOJ officials could be Russian Collusion (the Democrat go to, the Russians did it) when he knew and the FBI knew it was HB's laptop, they lied and the media and the social media companies were coerced to by the FBI to sell the laptop was not real.

Joe Biden continues to lie that he was not involved n HB's business deals.

Sadly, it appears Joe Biden used his own drug addicted son to sell access to foreign countries and then split the proceeds with at least 10 family members.

Isn't any liberal or libertarian interested to have the FBI, DOJ and IRS along with Congress and possibly an independent special council dig deeper into the Biden family possible bribery and money laundering charges from 2008 to 2020?

On a side note, my guess Hunter will not testify in front of Congress on the 13th or take the 5th.

I do. That one from me was not sarcasm. There is a rules for the wealthy and well connected and then there is rules for everybody else.

I feel like it is way more rare for a tax cheat to go to jail than it is for a tax cheat to screw over the USA.

Maybe if we started locking up tax cheats there would be less. Especially if we made examples out of high profile politically connected people.

Here is what is going to happen. The Bidens are using this to show how Joe is not protecting Hunter. Hunter fights like he is the House to try to make the GOP look stupid (not a heavy lift). Then, on Biden's last day in office, he pardons his son. If I were Joe and had a corrupt mindset I would want the special counsel to throw the book at him. Why? The more crimes he is charged with and pardoned for, the fewer things a Trump DOJ could go after him with should it come to that.

I really am quite cynical when it comes to our political elite class.

I can't believe this corrupt, communist, ultra left wing Department of Justice is going after another innocent tax evader.

When will the political prosecution end?

You and I are of one mind on this.  This is a dog and pony show to be sure.  I don't even think this is cynical thinking, it's thinking like a politician.  Although those might be synonymous.

Hunter repaid all his tax obligations to the IRS, so the Gov't is not at a loss.  Most of the time when this is done, the gov't doesn't even prosecute b/c the IRS has their money and has been made whole. I see this more as theatre and much to do about nothing in the end.  Let's just say he is convicted or pleads as a first first-time offender to a non violent white-collar crime, he'll get probation at most.

Again, this is not true. They don't want add funding and more agents to the IRS. The leader of the GOP Trump does not want to defund the IRS, some have floated a flat tax and eliminating the IRS.

On the flip side, I thought Joe Biden and Democrats campaigned on getting tax cheats. It took them 5 years and the DOJ let the statute of limitations run out on Hunter's unpaid 5 million plus income from Burisma. It also appears Joe Biden through the use of HB shell companies did not pay taxes on foreign income.

I will wait for Democrats to denounce HB's be a tax cheat to the tune of millions of unreported income and illegal expenditures he reported when he did file tax returns. Joe's in a pickle, but in. my opinion he put his sone in this position if he had any knowledge Hunter was influence peddling with foreign countries.
