Inside the Secret CBP Facebook Group Where Agents Joke About Migrant Deaths...
#1
...and Post Sexist Memes

https://www.propublica.org/article/secret-border-patrol-facebook-group-agents-joke-about-migrant-deaths-post-sexist-memes

Quote:Members of a secret Facebook group for current and former Border Patrol agents joked about the deaths of migrants, discussed throwing burritos at Latino members of Congress visiting a detention facility in Texas on Monday and posted a vulgar illustration depicting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez engaged in oral sex with a detained migrant, according to screenshots of their postings.

In one exchange, group members responded with indifference and wisecracks to the post of a news story about a 16-year-old Guatemalan migrant who died in May while in custody at a Border Patrol station in Weslaco, Texas. One member posted a GIF of Elmo with the quote, “Oh well.” Another responded with an image and the words “If he dies, he dies.”

Created in August 2016, the Facebook group is called “I’m 10-15” and boasts roughly 9,500 members from across the country. (10-15 is Border Patrol code for “aliens in custody.”) The group described itself, in an online introduction, as a forum for “funny” and “serious” discussion about work with the patrol. “Remember you are never alone in this family,” the introduction said.

The article goes on to discuss how this has been a trend in law enforcement circles all over the country with officers going to groups with extremist views, including white supremacists. They also mention them being in anti-government groups, which makes zero sense to me, but whatever.

Now they’re claiming AOC was threatening towards them while she was there. These CBP officers are a special kind of low-brow and fragile.

“According to The Washington Examiner, a conservative publication, two unnamed witnesses alleged that the New York Democrat was "crying, screaming, and yelling…in a threatening manner" at agents while on a tour of a Border Patrol facility in El Paso, Texas with the 38-member Congressional Hispanic Caucus.”

"And to these CBP officers saying they felt 'threatened' by me—they were literally discussing making a GoFundMe for an officer who attacked [me] on my tour," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted after heading to another facility in Clint, Texas. "They confiscated my phone, and they were all armed. I'm 5'4". They're just upset I exposed their inhumane behavior."

Hopefully when the light is shined on these cockroaches they get stepped on before they can scurry and hide.

The bad ones give the good ones a bad rap and the good ones (and everyone else) needs to speak out loudly about such things.

Anti-government makes sense...DJT (when asked about these private groups) said they don't like Democrats.   Mellow

So, my wife used to work in the emergency room of a big hospital so she was around Doctors all the time. And she noted how callous they appeared towards patients. Often joking about them dying or how many times certain patients make trips to the hospital for the same reason over and over again, implying they're too stupid to learn to just not eat red meat so much, among other things.

She asked some of the nurses about it and they said that when you're surrounded by death every day, it becomes a defense mechanism to dehumanize the patients so that you aren't wrought with grief over the constant death and despair you witness as part of your regular job.

That seems to be similar to what is happening here.

Not that that is an excuse for their behavior, but I do think there's reasoning behind it.

The stuff about AOC and other Democrats is purely because of how much Trump has politicized the border.

It's tragic that they see immigrants this way though.

So is she saying they are wrong or just that at 5'4" she doesn't present an actual threat?

Yeah...this is really no different than her claims. Except one could actually get a person fired, and the other just makes someone look bad.

I saw this story but I hesitated to post about it when I saw the amount of interactions on the posts in question. 3 or 4 isolated posts with a dozen to two dozen likes in a group of 9,500 isn't shocking to me. I'm in a group of a similar size for a podcast and some people post shitty things with similar levels of likes that do not reflect the opinions of the majority.

If there was more to look at to show that these posts reflect the culture of this group then I'd judge it far more harshly.

Agree completely with the sentiment about the hospitals. I see something similar with a new friend that is a long term ER nurse in a major metro. One of the nicest people ever, but when she starts talking about certain subsets, you can definitely see the effects of her concentrated experience with these groups.

We're not talking about a highly qualified talent pool. I minute step up from a TSA agent. Of coarse their degenerate immorality is going to shine bright in an environment where their leader treats these people the way he does. Pouring gas on a moron flame.

I hope they keep track of the really bad offenders that made their prejudice public. It would be great to follow their stories and watch as they struggle to find work once their asses are canned for misconduct like this. Would love to see them begging for government assistance only or get locked up for the type of petty crimes often associated by those of the fringes of society.

Yeah, that's my thinking.

We're all part of this message board, it doesn't mean all the meme's in the respective threads reflect the entirety of the board (and I don't think Matt was trying to imply that it did). But in today's world, I can see someone creating a story about "Super endowed, amazingly attractive message board moderator linked to hundreds of memes related to Trump saying dumb things, Clinton being crazy and gay porn (ah, the joys of a moderator opening a flagged post while his employees are standing a few feet from his monitor).

No one threatened  Castro. Maybe he wasn't screaming.

"There are many good agents—men and women working earnestly to care for the people in their custody," Castro tweeted. "But they are overwhelmed in a system that is morally bankrupt and challenged by rogue agents whose culture was on full display in the Facebook group revealed by ProPublica today. All Americans must help to change this system."

LOL but one "rogue" moderator and we're done for.

My friend who is a career LEO started off working in a jail. Did not take long for him to start making racists comments. I called him out and he has since moved up and on. The racist shit stopped.

Like we used to say in the Marine Corps attitude is contagious. As an infantryman all the devil dogs i was with didnt have the best opinion of guys from the Middle East. And some despicable shit was definitely said. As i think has been pointed out on this board before. The different generations of US armed service members had their own races/ethnicities whom many had a special level of hatred for. I don't think this situation is much different than that.

It would be bad to let it go unchallenged. But from what i have seen and experienced i dont want anybody burned at the stake for this.

So were supposed to feel sorry for some racist POS that revels in the torture of refugee children all of a sudden?  This obviously doesn't apply to all the agents working there.  Many are trying their hardest in an extremely difficult situation with their hands tied.  But to say we shouldn't call out the real POS amongst them and have them is lunacy.  Let them stand in front of the American people, on full public display, and explain how the racist comments they made on that board did not affect the way they treated the migrants in their care.

When the so-called leadership of these efforts say things like:

Quote:“I’ve been to detention facilities where I’ve walked up to these individuals that are so-called minors, 17 or under,” Morgan said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” in January. “I’ve looked at them and I’ve looked at their eyes, Tucker — and I’ve said that is a soon-to-be MS-13 gang member. It’s unequivocal.”

...its really no surprise we find ourselves in situations like these.

I'd propose (and I'll leave it to those good guys in the profession to say if they see it or not) that if one is inclined toward being a bully, racist, hate filled for minorities or whatever they might feel a "calling" to positions where they can take it out on those "others" that "deserve" such treatment.

Like a person who wants to be d doctor or a nurse wants to help people, a person who wants to have power over "them" may want to be a member of this administration those who handle immigrant.

Again, we all agree it's not ALL of the people who are doing and saying the awful things...but those that are need called out and removed.
