For the third time in his career, the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback has to get acclimated to the strategy, playcalling and personality of a new offensive coordinator. The previous two times he was a young player, still learning his way in the NFL. Although his ideas were heard, he often had to defer to the wishes of his lead offensive assistants.
But this time around, as a sixth-year veteran, the Bengals are looking for Dalton to take on a larger role in helping manage the transition to first-time coordinator Ken Zampese.
They want Dalton to be "the interpreter."
As Dalton's quarterbacks coach the past five seasons Zampese has built up a rapport with the passer that he will need to quickly establish with other offensive players. The language Zampese and his quarterbacks have spoken in recent seasons will have to be translated to the running backs, receivers, tight ends and offensive linemen who have seldom worked with him. That's where Dalton, as the unquestioned offensive leader, becomes important.
"He's going to be an interpreter at times on things and have to basically interpret and take the ball and continue to progress it all forward," head coach Marvin Lewis said of Dalton.
Once players return to Cincinnati for offseason workouts next month, Dalton's voice could be as important as Zampese's while other offensive players start getting a better idea of where the new coordinator will be taking their scheme.
Since his promotion in January, Zampese has echoed Lewis in saying Cincinnati's offense won't undergo a massive overhaul under his guidance. Some of the principles incorporated by the past two coordinators, Jay Gruden and Hue Jackson, will still be at play. Tempo and balance are expected to remain key components of Zampese's scheme.
Last offseason, Dalton was charged with being more of a team leader. His solid play, and heightened off-field relationships with teammates made it clear he did what was asked of him. He has to do what's asked of him this offseason by living up to his unofficial title of "interpreter."
It's nothing too surprising, but it'll go further to cement Dalton as the face of this team.

Naming Zampese as OC seemed a lot like saying 'we like what we've got, we need somebody to just keep that going forward.'

It's Daltons show now on offense . Zamp won't get the credit that Jay and Hue have gotten for the offensive success because of this most likely. Which is good for us, since we won't have to hire another OC in 2 years.

I think AD and Zamp are going to have a good year. AD looks like he is comfortable ,in charge and this is now his team.(He just needs to learn to not tackle with his thumbs) Keep the O base and building off of it with a new perspective from the OC. Bengals O is going to be lights out this year.

The addition of Lazor may mean we add more spread aspects to the mix. That was a curious hire as qb coach, but made sense when you hear Zamp talking about how he and hie wanted to add spread concepts. Maybe it was zamp pushing for those aspects and now we will see more that he is running the offense.

A ridiculous article. Zampese has been his coach the entire time he's been with the team.
The bigger issue for Dalton at this point is who the F are his receivers after AJ Green and Tyler Eifert?

Just an experienced AJ Green and Eifert is better receivers than what he's had the last 4 out of 5 years.

calling it now, Zampese has observed so many OC thats its gonna be hard for him not to be great.
Then we lose him and he takes some of our guys. Seems to be the trend

The receivers in 2013 were good. Marvin Jones had 10TDs.
And we had Marvin Jones and Sanu and Green in 2012 as well, plus Gresham's usual contribution.
The only years where there was a dirth of receiving talent was Dalton's first year where it was AJ Green and Simpson and Gresham and in 2014 when there were lots of injuries. The rest of the years the talent was there.
For 2016 though you gotta have more than one WR who can get open.

Let's face it - usually coordinators are only as good as the talent that they have.
Name me a great coordinator that has had a crappy QB or a defensive coordinator with bad talent.

The receivers in 2013 were not as good as an experienced Green and Eifert. Eifert wasn't used that much in 2013, and now he's going to be a lot bigger target than Jones was in 13. Sanu has never been a big factor in this offense unless everyone in front of him had been hurt.
In 2012 Marvin Jones and Sanu started a combined 9 games. Just because they were on the team doesn't mean they did much. Oh, and Gresham can't even start in front of a no name TE for the Cardinals, and it's not like he hasn't played with Palmer either.
Like I said. An experienced Green and Eifert are better receivers than what we had the last 4 out of 5 years.
