Let's discuss the 4th WR on the depth chart- upcoming season
#1
I think a position thats up for grabs is that 4th WR behind
Higgins Chase Boyd. As much as this offense likes to run
Empty sets and single back sets , the 4th WR has a important role.
There will be times defenses simply will have Chase and Higgins under lock and key. Hayden Hurst is new to the
System favored by ZT. It may take him time to get acclaimated. Boyd will get his targets but this offense still needs to find consistant 4th WR

Heres what we know.
Trent Taylor. He came.up.Big with a huge 2pt conversion
At Arrowhead. ZT likes him. Seems to be a precise route runner.

Mike Thomas. Just resigned last week. Another WR ZT likes from.his days in L.A. Pretty decent hands. Has 1 TD
In 2 years going off memory.

Trenton Irwin. Practice squad WR in 2021

Scotty Washington. Good sized framed WR.

The Bengals didnt really pursue a WR in FA. Signs could
Point to the Bengals drafting a WR.
Boyd is signed through 2023 I think.
Higgins is a free agent after next season.
I can see the Bengals drafting a WR in RDs 2 to 7.
I think.that 4th WR spot is wide open.
Does anyone see the Bengals signing a FA WR at
A bargain price in the immediate future.
It wont happen but the thought of AJ Green returning
Is intriqing. How about a Jarvis Landry...

Even during the season, I wanted a 3rd round WR/CB return specialist but that thought went more and more towards a WR as the season progressed. They never had that x factor off of the bench. All of their flash was already on the field. They needed someone that the opposing team forgets about once in awhile.

There is good WR talent into round 2.

If we tade back & get an extray day 2 pick, I could see going WR fairly early.

I like Dotson (probably not at 31), Christian Watson, and Skyy Moore in Rd 2. Metchie could be there Rd 3.

Still, WR is depth/luxury. I'd prioritize LG/OL insurance, CB, and 3T at the moment. Those guys will play more snaps when we are healthy. If a couple of those boxes get checked pre-draft, I say we go for it.

I would like to see Trent Taylor get more snaps in. Maybe he can be your poor man’s Cooper Krupp/Hunter Renfrow. Solid hands guy. Nothing wrong with a reliable target down field in empty sets.

If we get a WR in the draft I hope we get someone with elite speed. If Chase gets dinged up, it would be nice to have another receiver that can burn a defense. Neither Higgins nor Boyd have that top speed.

A WR that returns kicks is the idea for the draft I believe

He's small, but Calvin Austin could bust a defense when they cheat toward Chase.

This is pretty much my thoughts exactly. I think we need to get one more player before the draft maybe a DT to free it up just a little. We have traded back in the 2nd Rd twice in Zac's 3 drafts so there is a decent chance they could trade out of the 1st. I think we do need draft a 4th WR but trading back is about the only way I think we should early because of all the positions you mentioned that need prioritized.

Would like to see a 4th WR drafted but in no way should it be in the first 2 rounds imo.

We got Marvin Jones in the 5th should not be hard to get a 4th WR in later rounds.

It is nice to be drafting for depth and not starters. If we sign a CB before the draft that is...I guess Apple would most likely start in front of a rookie CB.

The way the League is going, the priority has to be getting as many legit WRs on 1st contracts as possible on the roster. Burrow and Chase are worth the mega-contracts. Higgins/Boyd are replaceable to me down the road. Need to get younger weapons to replace Higgins when he goes for his huge 2nd contract. Boyd's next contract needs to be a cheaper one or he should get replaced as well.

I think you have to throw darts at WR every year. I would say you should draft 1 WR in the first 3 rounds (maybe stretch it to the 4th if there are huge needs to be addressed first). If you hit the pick, great you just made your roster cheaper. If you hit "too many times", even better, now you have trade-bait.

If you think this is crazy, the Rams almost lost the Super Bowl because OBJ went down and they only had Cooper Kupp as a legit weapon on that final drive. That's a lesson the Bengals should learn, you never have too many weapons. Just keep stockpiling them for a rainy day.

I'm with you. I have a lot of faith in Trent.  Good hands, good route runner.  But, of course, I'm extrememly biased, having played ball with his dad and  known his dad all my life.

I'm all for BPA, and I understand the intrigue of adding to a strength, but I'd rather upgrade a more pressing need early on. With Chase, Higgins, and Boyd as your 1-3, the WR4 is the 4th option at best (really, 6th, with Mixon and Hurst in the mix), and when you have that may good weapons demanding coverage it's easier for the guys lower on the depth chart to produce.

Of the guys we have, I like Morgan for his blocking (in addition to special teams). He can certainly carve out a role, and I hope we can get him more involved on offense. I also like Taylor as a second slot in 4 wide sets, and also as a substitute for Boyd when he needs rest. He has really good, reliable hands, which also play well on punt returns. I'm perfectly fine sticking with him as our primary punt returner, I cannot overstate how nice it is to not have to worry about a muff. I hope we see him a little more on offense too. Mike Thomas is a solid role player but I can see him being a camp cut, who possibly becomes a veteran PS stash. Ditto with Trenton Irwin, who I think has a future coaching.

On to possible hidden gems, Makai Polk in the 7th is someone who I'd like. Could be our Auden Tate successor, not quite as big but still has good size. Polk didn't do much in college until breaking out in 2021 with over 1000 yards and 9 TD. Those are impressive numbers in the SEC. Projected as a 7th rounder or UDFA.
Plus how can you not like his confidence?

Agree and seems I recall that being the comp pic we received from losing Chad even.

That's exactly what I would think 4th round or later for WR this particular year. The offense has got all the love in FA and feel the defense deserves the early picks unless a stud TE or something falls into our lap. That's very unlikely though.

Lots of possible solutions.  The one the Bengals will use is to draft a WR in one of the first three rounds.  They will likely go for a speed guy, that can take the top off a defense.  Right now, that is only Chase.  Another speed guy gives them HUGE flexibility in 4 receiver sets.

I haven't been scouting as much yet, but have a crap load of tape to review....(tape, haha).

I can bet you that it will be a speed guy from the draft.

Did the Cart get a demotion already?

Uff...fail on my part for missing that opportunity.

Did even consider we had wr4 on the roster already.
