Michael Johnson

Top overall grade: LB Vontaze Burfict, 87.6
Lowest overall grade: DE Michael Johnson, 41.1
The talent disparity along the Bengals’ defensive line is quite amazing. Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap are both top-15 players at their respective positions, but the line didn’t feature a single other player with a competent grade in 2016. Michael Johnson, Domata Peko, Pat Sims, and Will Clarke all saw more than 350 snaps, with none of them grading higher than 46.6.

This is the final grade from last season.  You sure you still want to consider MJ a good run stopping DE?

But but but, Marvin lewis says hes good . And he knows more than us

I was an MJ fanboy.

He was good at one point. Just like Geathers.

Teams move on. Looking like its that time

Maybe he needs to grow the hair back out and get some better glasses.

He lost his edge when he got paid. Went studious and soft.

It's my opinion he is trying to save his brain because he has plans after the game.

Which is fine but i think he thinks about it too much.

Doubt they'll cut him this season, but maybe they can at least limit his snaps. There are now viable options now, unlike in previous seasons. Willis and Lawson will be hard to deny if MJs play continues to drop off.

I look for him to be cut after this season. Less dead money and a good cap hit avoided. Might need it to re-up Burfict and/or Eifert.

Clarke should be jettisoned too.

Saw more from Lawson/Willis in one game than Clarke's entire time here.

I think we have something with those guys (Lawson/Willis). Time to trim the fat.

I'd keep Clarke over MJ as he costs a lot less.
The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.

He is:

1 - Not good
2 - Expensive
3 - really Not good

He has 16 Sacks....In the last 4 years.  Totaling 60 Starts!

He basically averages a Sack every 4 games.

Over those 4 years, he's made 27 million from the Bengals and Bucs

1.7 MIll/sack.  Dang

I think just looking at his sack numbers and making conclusions based upon only that is not fair. With that said, he is overrated, most games I barely notice him, he makes very little impact in the pass rush department. Even if he is above average at playing the run and/or holding the edge, I'm not a fan.

I want my starting 4-3 end to get to the QB consistently.

He literally disappeared when he left for Tampa.

Who would've thought playing with Atkins and Dunlap made him better

If you teach a guy to do nothing but seal the edge I bet we could get a guy in 1 off-season who could MATCH MJs production

Dude just Isn't worth starting over a younger high draft pick.

There are many reasons to cut Johnson, but cap space isn't one of them. The Bengals are still sitting on almost $18m in cap space. Upgrades and extensions are/were possible without cutting Johnson.

I saw one play where MJ spun and fell down without much effort from the lineman...that's when I knew it was over. I think we Keep Dunlap, Clarke, Willis and if he keeps playing well Chris Smith. We can the bring Lawson in as a swing DE to give us extra depth.

Worst spin move ever. Just spins in place. Dude isn't even giving effort anymore.

This is the point I have made so many times.  Fred would always quote a stat of MJ getting a "hurry" where he was 10 yards upfield, totally out of the play, and a QB would scramble towards him and be like "what are you doing up here"? before running off.

The synergy across the front four when a QB has fear of his blind side rush has been something I've been waiting for and we now have it.  MJ and Gilberry won't likely be let go because of the Bengal's loyalty, but this whole recognition of a lack of speed and the additions of Smith and Willis should at least regulate those guys to the bench.  If MJ is starting over Willis, we clearly have lost our minds.

It's why Sims, Johnson and Gilberry all look terrible and yet you know they are probably safe.

I always wondered why he never tried inside pass rushing moves...after seeing that the other night, I know why.

Like I said, I think he gets cut but they are going to make sure the young guys can handle everything over the next couple weeks first.

So, had the Bengals just released PacMan and MJ, how much savings would that equate to? 13 mill/year?
