And what percent had landlines 20 years ago? Most people still have them in my area because comcast bundles phone services into one package with TV and internet.

Not every school has internet or computer access that is readily available. You also cannot go to a library or school at any hour of the day or always on the weekend. That and libraries aren't close in every community.

So we should give out dial up?

Look, I was as surprised as you are to learn that fact.  She pulled up data from somewhere that backed it up.  Yes, there has been a decline, but not as much as you'd think.

I'm not really shocked at 66%. That's about what I expect. That's also not very high.

IIRC, the actual number was closer to 70%.

Again, not surprised. Most people over 35 can't imagine living without a landline. I imagine the number of millenials signing up for the service is much lower. I see no reason why I'll ever have one.

Also, having worked at Best Buy Mobile,
I can tell you who is buying those phones and what is available to purchase. Not any under 40 and not very much. Old people get angry when we couldn't tell them anything about those phones but could explain all the features of a cell phone.

One is relevant and one is less so.

I don't even think you can get dial up anymore.  I was BSing with my boss the other day and he was telling me that his parents Internet provider (I forget who he said they're with) said they HAD to switch, because nobody uses dial up anymore. LOL

No, broadband isn't a "right" but in the "greatest country God himself ever created"™ I think we should have internet access made available to everyone.  I know, I know, there's no profit in doing things to help people.  Money > people is the mantra in the US.  But heaven forbid we help a poor kid get a leg up because he might watch a movie too.

I think the teachers should be able to negotiate their own contracts individually. That way the top teachera get paid their worth and the bad teaChers get fired or paid poorly. Would also be a way for parents to see how schools value their talent.

There are loads of places with free wifi. Plus you can get a hotspot from any cell phone company. There is no need for broadband. And it's cheap enough they can budget accordingly.

We should give out nothing . Loads of free wifi locations plus a hotspot service is reasonable. Just saw an offer from. Sprint for $8 a month. They can budget that if its important to them.

Oh you most definitely can in some areas. Not many people offer it, though.

I guess they realize how much better having internet at home is compared to going to the local Dunkin Donuts or Panera.

And the rich get richer.  In your scenario, only the most affluent school districts would be able to attract all of the best teachers, and the shit bricks would trickly down to the inner city's.  Believe in another thread you said ideally you would want 'more black people'....  As long as they know their place that is...

Sounds like your real qualm here is with the PRICE of broadband.  Which is exponentially overpriced in this country b/c of...  whats that?  LACK OF COMPETITION that has been handed to ISP over the years, let alone sweetheart bills passed across the country limiting the public from labeling FIBER as a public utility and creating their own networks.

My issue is that I have to pay someone else's internet bill because they refuse to spend 8 dollars a month.

And nothing is stopping schools from hiring good teachers. They just have to budget their money pool to hire quality staff. You act like all schools pay the same now? Rich schools pay more now . So the s--- Bricks still work at poor schools the problem now is that they can't be fired because of the Union. Under my way they could be fired.

8 dollars a month. If they can't afford that then they don't need internet . They have way bigger issues than the speed of their connecrion to watch porn.

Maybe they want to get their kids used to seeing men and women have sex so they can learn to make an emotional connection to the opposite sex.  Ninja

Correct.  Richer schools would be at an even greater advantage.  You're not even reading replies anymore.

The amount you reference porn on these boards as a justification for withholding what is essentially a basic human right "open access to information" is disturbing.  Are you afraid you're dollars are going toward poor people masturbating?  Well I'm pretty sick of many more of my (and your) dollars going to the military industrial complex.  If you want to be mad about taxes, expend your energy in the right direction.  The pentegon outright 'looses' billiions of dollars all the time...  POOF!  thin air.  But, let's focus on some poor schmuck getting another free handout from the gov.  Rather my taxes go to someone domestically than Isreal or multinational weapons manufacturers.

Yes avoid why on earth they can't pay 8 dollars a month. Avoid at all costs.
