Pretty strange that he actually played in the pre-season.  As soon as he whiffed on a block the Lions HC should have given him the night off.

Lmaoo

these people.

Like clockwork
Right now IN THIS MOMENT i do simply because he’s caught like 1 ball that Iv seen.

But ppl who know football way more than me are telling us that he’s doing fine in practice so that’s what I’ll stick with. You only take a WR that high of hes AJ Green or Larry Fitzgerald or Deandre Hopkins. So those are my expectations for him and i don’t think I’m being unfair with those expectations

Both Penei Sewell and Ja’Marr Chase took 2020 off and it shows.

Do you think that Lions fans are comparing Sewell to *googles Lions busts on o-line* Aaron Gibson? Penei Gibson, anyone?

The 2nd replay where he grew some alligator arms big time.  Dude avoided the hit because he was looking at the safety and not the ball.

The other 2 drops were just that drops.  There were defensive players in the vicinity but not where they'd light his ass up.

This is all mental for Chase right now and if he doesn't get it out of his system the first game against a Mike Zimmer defense, then we might as well put Mike Thomas out there because he's more valuable than someone with the dropsies.   Those drops could potentially drop the Vikings game for them.  Then what do we say.  Ehh he's rusty.  We'll win next week because he'll catch those drops.

I wonder if we had taken Sewell if he'd be immediately written off like Og or have folks still clinging to hope in year 3-4 like Price.

Though in seriousness, I think both Chase and Sewell will be fine in time, but both TeamChase and TeamSewell look a little silly right now.
Leave it to Cincinnati and Detroit — the teams with the longest playoff win droughts in the NFL — to take players in the first round who took a year off and became rusty and non-current in their respective skill sets.

Many players take a "year off" and are fine. Taking a year off due to injury should be harder to come back from given the injury then taking a year off to "train" (I hope).

Yet players return from injury all the time and look good in the preseason. CJ for example got nearly a year off to recover from Achilles tear. And he's played and played well. So has Reader and Wayne (until recently injured). Honestly guys we have plenty of players who have shown that this year off excuse isn't the excuse people are making it out to be.

Honestly not sold on the excuse a player who took a year off not recovering from injury needs more time then players who spent the year recovering from significant injury.

It’s almost like teams draft players for the long term, and not just their rookie seasons…

Anyway, Rashawn Slater sat out and he looks fantastic. But then again he was always projected to be more NFL ready than Sewell and some of the other top guys.

Plus, Sewell and Chase are a couple of the youngest players in this draft. They are 20 and 21 respectively.

living in in Los Angeles, I see alot of Charger news and I have heard more then once that the "other teams" that passed on Herbert are kicking themselves right now and I have to agree with that....Herbert is a stud QB, no weaknesses that I can see and a great attitude to boot....then they go ahead and draft Slater who they are are saying is already very good. Some teams just seem to evaluate talent better and have more luck on thier side.  Watch out for the Bolts with Herbert throwing laser guided bombs to Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Im still waiting to see Joe B hit one of those.

I’d say no one cares, but we do have the president of the Herbert fan club here. But other than that…no one cares.

I doubt we will have to worry about it, but when you are the team that gets to take the 1st QB off the board you are stuck hoping the guys you didn't take don't look too good IF your QB isn't stellar.

I think both Bengals and Chargers fans should be very happy with their QB choices.

Right.  This weird QB rivalry with Chargers fans makes zero sense to me.  I guess they need people to think that they actually got the best QB in last year's draft class.

Cool moral victory, I guess!  We're plenty happy with our guy.
Everything in this post is my fault.

I think they should be too, but the thing about taking the 1st QB or 1st pick in any sense is knowing that you "coulda had" anyone else in that draft.  John Ross was bad...he was also taken before Patrick Mahommes.  Ken O'Brien was a good pick...but he was taken before Dan Marino.

If Burrow wins and is awesome then no harm, but if Herbert ends up being better than Burrow it's going to be "The Bengals shoulda traded down and they'd have Herbert and all of Miami's draft picks."  Believe me, I lived in Chicago and they never got over the fact that they took Cedric Benson at #4 when they "COULDA" traded down and taken Aaron Rodgers.

I'm just recognizing the argument that could possibly be out there.  We watched the Bengals have a successful turn around when they got AJ Green and then got Dalton in round 2 while guys like Ponder, Gabbert, and Locker went earlier and were worse.  Such is life.

I think there is always going to be a natural QB class rivalry with fans.  Look at a recent QB class...Josh Allen is currently the best QB in that class and off the top of my head the Browns, Jets, Giants, and Broncos all have fanbases that probably wish they had him.  Would he have been as successful there?  Would Mahommes have been as successful if he were taken by Chicago and Trubisky went to the Chiefs?

These are the things we can but ponder FOREVERRRRRRR.
I think the biggest things we, as fans, will regret when it comes to the Chase pick are:
1. Genuinely believing a rookie was going to come in and be an undisputed #1 WR and the marvel that he was in college.
2. Comparing him to John Ross from the second he joined the team.

I get it. We have had three top 10 WRs in the last 11 drafts. One was instantly transcendent. Another was basically a bust from the second he joined the team. He wasn't able to stay healthy and, when he was healthy, he had no impact on the game. I think it was inevitable that Chase was going to be judged on the Green-Ross binary.

So far, Chase's career is reminding fans of Ross more than Green. Is history bound to repeat itself? Did we actually draft the same stupid player twice in less than a decade? I feel like our fanbase is still kind of reeling from the Ross pick. It wasn't viewed favorably at the time and it was only natural to want to say "I told you so!" when it, predictably, didn't work out.

And now, again, a divisive pick at WR. Not for the same reasons, mind you. Ross was undeniably a reach when we picked him. He was all speed with questionable toughness, injury history and questions about the difficulty of his opposition tied in with a suspicion that he only got drafted that high because he broke the 40 yard dash record at the combine.

Chase, on the other hand, was definitively not considered a reach. The reason his selection was divisive was because we could have taken a player that we'd been primed to take for, literally over a year to that point. There were people holding Sewell signs at home games during the 2020 season. There were concerns about winning games because it would knock us out of "Sewell range." There was even rumblings of "oh shit, NYJ is now picking #2. There isn't a QB that is worth that pick, so they'll obviously take Sewell. We're screwed!"

When a fanbase builds a player up in their head like this, it's only natural that having the opportunity to draft them and passing on that opportunity will create divisiveness.

We experienced a somewhat similar sensation when we drafted Zeitler instead of DeCastro, who we had convinced ourselves would not be available at our pick in 2012. Then he was, and we traded down anyway. There was a very similar visceral reaction to Zeitler. Fortunately for him, he played well from the beginning of his career, but had he struggled, the same questions would have started to come up as well.

I hope we, as a fan base, keep in mind the differences between Chase and Ross going into the season.

Chase was not a reach. He was not a bad pick. He is not a bust waiting to happen.

If you stop comparing him to Ross, you'll feel much better about the idea that rookies are still rookies. The expectation that he'd step in and immediately be our #1 WR and that we'd have a top 3 WR corp between him, Boyd and Higgins was ALWAYS unrealistic and I'm grateful that that bubble has been popped early. That way, we won't have to suffer this same angst 8 weeks in when Chase isn't averaging 100 yards per game like so many people had come to expect during this off season.
