Trump lawyers make new demands before a Mueller interview

Quote:President Donald Trump's legal team demanded that before the President agrees to an interview, the special counsel's team must prove it has evidence of Trump committing a crime and that it needs testimony from the President to conclude its probe, The New York Times reported Friday.

According to the Times, Trump's legal team set its new conditions on Friday with the special counsel team led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller. The demands mark further reason to believe the President will not submit voluntarily to an interview with the special counsel.

The Times account painted a picture of Trump's legal team as increasingly willing to combat the Mueller investigation while seeking to influence public opinion.

Rudy Giuliani told the Times that Mueller probably would not agree to these conditions. He conceded it was still possible the President would agree to an interview and continued to question the objectivity of the investigators.

"If they can come to us and show us the basis and that it's legitimate and that they have uncovered something, we can go from there and assess their objectivity," Giuliani said.

The same report said Trump's lawyers had contested a request from the special counsel team to interview White House chief of staff John Kelly, with White House lawyer Emmet Flood seeking to learn what investigators plan to ask and to narrow the topics of an interview.

The new conditions outlined in the Times report came as yet another set of demands around a potential sit-down between the President and Mueller's team. Trump said in January that he wanted to speak with Mueller and would do so under oath, although his attorney at the time, John Dowd, said he would decide if the
President were to agree to an interview.

As deliberations continued through the spring over testimony from Trump, CNN reported that the President's legal team was told he was not a target of the Mueller investigation, and in April, CNN reported that preparations had begun for a potential interview.

But by late April, Trump tapped Giuliani to join his legal team, and the former New York mayor has offered varying statements about the terms for an interview with the President, fromnarrowing the subjects in discussion to demanding information on a confidential FBI source.

IF Mueller has evidence, then indict the man and whomever else. And get on with it. "Conditions" be damned.

Weird...now it seems like Trump doesn't want to be interviewed at all.

Strange.

The tweet comes as Trump's ex-campaign chief Paul Manafort, who was indicted by the special counsel last fall, faces trial for the second day in federal court in Virginia.

Sessions, who endorsed Trump's presidential bid during the 2016 campaign, recused himself from the Russia investigation last March, before
Mueller was appointed. The investigation is being overseen by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has defended Mueller against critics in Congress.

The president has criticized Sessions for his recusal. In June, the president wrote in a post on Twitter that Mueller was continuing to investigate "all because Jeff Sessions didn't tell me he was going to recuse himself."

"I would have quickly picked someone else. So much time and money wasted, so many lives ruined...and Sessions knew better than most that there was No Collusion," the president wrote.

The Justice Department and the office of the special counsel did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNBC on Wednesday.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for elaboration on the president's comments.

The special counsel is investigating the president's tweets criticizing Sessions as part of a wider inquiry into whether the president has obstructed justice, [url=https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/26/mueller-looking-at-trump-tweets-in-obstruction-probe-report.html]The New York Times reported last month.

It's funny how Trump is calling this a rigged witch hunt when he preemptively called the 2016 election rigged before he won it.

It's also funny how he could call it a disgrace and staining the country and a rigged witch hunt led by deeply conflicted people and angry democrats and that it needs to be stopped immediately and your GOP-led congress does nothing of substance at all to respond to that.

The last time I heard someone desperatly calling about witch hunt, no proof and liars eveywhere, it was Lance Armstrong.

And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Looks like Mueller isn’t after Trump for collusion, but for obstruction.

Mueller most have agreed with Rudy that collusion isn't a crime and went to plan B.

Or that was what it was all along...since no one knows what Mueller knows.

But I'll take your word that he must have agreed with Rudy!   Smirk

Which has been my position the entire time. Collusion, which is conspiring with and benefiting from the person(s) committing the crime, is a crime, but likely committed more by people in his peripheral than him personally. Even with the Cohen revelation I don't see enough evidence for that.

But because Trump has said "there was no collusion" (as if he understands what it means) if he is not charged with THAT he will announce to his defenders/supporters that everything Mueller did was fake and a witch hunt.  It doesn't matter if they have iron-clad proof he obstructed or killed someone...he has hung his entire defense on "there was no collusion".  Essentially Trump and his sheep have created a marketing campaign about something that probably was never going to happen in order to deflect anything that DOES happen.
