Why does he refuse to condemn them?

Point of fact, you don't have to do ANY of that. You can simply recognize Trump is not a nuanced nor deep thinker. And his speaking style demonstrates this. His comments suggests he was complimenting the appearance of the crowd.

That doesn't mean he has suddenly forgotten all the trash he has talked about African Minnesotans.

No one disputes that Trump was "complimenting the [white] crowd."   Though I might dispute he was simply referring to "good looks." If that were the case, why add all that talk about hardworking ancestors instead of good looking ancestors?

What is disputed is that he included African Minnesotans in his complement.

"Trump is not a deep thinker" doesn't warrant a claim that he suddenly "forgot" about African Minnesotans in that one moment and thought they had good genes too, as did their ancestors who settled Minnesota.

Until you can explain why he forgot, or changed his mind for a moment, then you have no argument.

Claiming others "twist" his words because they don't think he forgot is a weak argument, a wasted effort in making Trump seem less racist and xenophobic in one part of a racist, xenophobic speech.

What's the gain? It just seems a weak effort to claim there are some few times when people ARE really twisting Trump's words.
But the mission is not accomplished by ignoring the who speech and claiming those who don't ignore it are twisting his words.
