Will Pence automatically be the Republican candidate if Trump can't run?
#1
THIS THREAD IS NOT ABOUT TRUMP BASHING. PLEASE KEEP IT ON TOPIC.

What will the Republican Party do?

Will they keep running Trump and claim he will be healthy enough to serve as President like the Dems did with FDR?

How bad will it have to get before they pull Trump as thEIr offical candidate, or is it already too late?

Will Pence automatically become the new candidate?

What about any mail in votes that have already been cast for Trump?

Trump will stay the nominee unless his condition were to take a drastic change for the worse. I'm reading that he's currentlybasymptomatic. Even with Trump's profile (advanced age, obesity) that has him among the high risk category, he'll probably make it through just fine considering the access to the best healthcare in the world.

Should he require a hospitalization or god forbid being put on a ventilator, I do believe that Pence would take over the ticket. Logistically I have no idea how that would work with mailed votes that have alresdy been cast.

I was wondering that myself. I think as long as he alive, Trump is the one that will be the Republican presidential candidate. What I want to know is what would happen if Trump dies? If it's after election day and Trump won, I believe Pence just becomes the president. But, I want to know what happens if Trump passes before or on election day.

I'm sure he'll be fine.
Everything in this post is my fault.

Matt can probably answer this better, but If Trump were to pass tomorrow, Pence would become POTUS.

The party would choose a new candidate, which may or may not be Pence. Their process for that, I honestly don't know. But it would be up to the party and not a primary.

Horace Greely is the only time I'm familiar with this happening. He ran on a socialist platform, got beat soundly be Grant and died between the election and the Electoral College. The EC declared Grant the winner as he'd won the popular vote, so it wasn't an issue of someone winning, then dropping dead.

I don't think you can even put someone on the ballot new now. Especially with this mail in ballot surge, but can you do it legally? No party is owed a place on the ballot.

If he passes before inauguration then the basically the RNC would instruct the electors what to do and they would all most likely fall in line to try to avoid a Biden or Pelosi presidency.

That's a good point.  You cant just take a Trump vote and change it to Pence because things changed....i think.

Well Treee might have a point.  The electors can cast their vote for whomever they want, so I guess all Trump electors could vote for Pence. I'm talking in the event he would die.

It's a presidential election. The electoral college, with some limitations, is who will be casting votes based off the popular vote in their state. If trump passed away or withdrew his candidacy today, the gop would just put a new name on the ballot.

But I'm not sure if the EC would be bound to the popular vote given a candidate change.

This is an issue I've had with early voting. Say for instance I'd vote for Biden over Trump so I vote early and then Trump is replaced by Pence and I'd now pick Pence over Biden. Can I retract my early vote.

Same question if i voted Trump over Biden but would take Biden over Pence.
