You don't think there's protection in those contracts to protect broadcasters from work stoppages?

If the NBA season is shortened and games are not aired then money will be returned/lost. Same goes for the NHL and MLB and the NCAA.

Do you really believe CBS and other stations are just out 870 million dollars this year for the tourney ? They paid for a product that the NCAA can't deliver.

"Hey, NCAA. This is CBS. You know that billion dollar deal we have? You just keep all that. We know it's not your fault. We'll just air Golden Girls and Alf reruns this year. We'll get em next year."

No. There's millions upon millions of dollars at stake. Huge losses will occur at every level. Networks, shools, conferences, advertisers, venues, local businesses.

This also will factor in greatly in future contract negotiations.

To believe that all these teams are just cool with it because they magically keep tv revenue is absolutely absurd.
No the money is fully guaranteed  the tournament is basically free money for the NCAA. If CBS/Turner  didn't guarantee it they would fine another network that would. The NCAA got there money there fine.

I'm not too worried about it in my age group, but it's a pretty deadly ordeal for older folk.

16% of the country is 65+, that's ~52.3 million people who are at risk of something that is currently killing at roughly a 10% rate in their age groups.

THAT is why it's worrying.

That’s a point.

No advertiser (TV) guarantees money with no "out" clauses. No games = no money. Think of it this way, if Budweiser buys ads for a college BB tournament game and that game is not broadcast, Budweiser will be refunded 100% of their money. So, in the end, there is no money to give the NCAA if the product is depleted (games not played)

Actually the category "Disney themed parks, "experiences" and products sold" outpaces every other category of revenue stream according to their financials I just looked at.  Media is a very close 2nd.

US themed parks and resorts produced over 20.2 billion dollars in revenue in 2018.

It's also a ridiculously high level of margin category too.

If that's not a "huge money maker for them" then I don't know what is.

If I'm in poor health, I'm more worried about the flu. Sorry.

The flu, tuberculosis, pneumonia, etc. can be airborne too. People hear the word "airborne" and freak the hell out when talking about covid-19. Too many movies probably, idk. I just recommend to people who are scared to avoid big events that are completely unnecessary. I don't think anyone here is trying to say you can't die from covid-19, but there are so many things that people die from everyday in America alone and no one panics. It's not good news/it's boring.

You have companies right now posing as the CDC in social media causing panic to buy their damn product to stay prepared. If this virus kills a lot more people, I'm blaming the last minute hoarders. Some people can't leave work to go stand outside of a Costco or Sam's Club to prep. Cleaning supplies/Disinfectants should be properly distributed to keep people sanitized. This is all overblown and ridiculous.

You nailed it my friend, don't get banned for telling the truth.

I couldn't of said it any better.

So back on the original topic from the OP.  This will probably have an affect on the NFL not only for free agency, draft prospect visits and pro days but also the draft as a whole.  We may not see Burrow go on stage to cheers from the crowd when he is picked #1.  But really if it is that big of an issue by then it is understandable.

Praying right now for the people affected and also the Draft is a ways away. I have hope.

Still, when 60 million Americans were infected by the swine flu it wasn't a big deal, this isn't even close to that.

There were 60,000 deaths from the flu last flu season (2017-2018). While no one really knows about China Italy has had a grand total of 1000. Old people get sick and die that's the way it is. Seems like a case of Chicken Little running around screaming "The Sky IS Falling".
I gotta say that from the way our media is hyping this latest in a long lime of annual pandemics, I fully expected 10% of the World's population to have perished from it by now..

However, since the negative impact, compared to say "swine flu" is quite miniscule in comparison, I'm quickly becoming annoyed by all of the overreaction, both Nationally and Globally. Life never halted for any of Zika, Ebola, Swine Flu, Bird Flu, etc., etc. Why start mass panic now?

The fact that sports leagues and the NCAA are cancelling events is just crazy. The participants in any of those events are among those considered "least at risk" of a negative outcome.

I don't get it either Sunset ? If my understanding is correct it's not airborne and those are the really dangerous ones. 1,000's and 1,000's of people die of the flu every year. Regular precautions that I already do and everybody should do should limit it's impact, no ?

At any rate I hope everybody stays well.

I don't know if that data is true but I think it is more than just chicken little this time.

I have never heard the media go out of their way to make a President look this bad, regardless of political affiliation.

38 people have died from this and all of this happens? This is beyond chicken IMO.

We need to look at this as something we need to research, take into account and control. Never panic.

People are panicking like Dalton in the pocket! J/K love Andy, he good man. Smirk

People just listen to the media too much evidently. I never wanted to comment about all of this until now as I hate talking P&R.

The completely miserable sad media has forced me to speak about this and I don't like it and really dislike that people still listen
to this stuff like it is the pure truth. Everything is slanted now a days and it isn't just the sports media which I highly dislike except
a few guys. This is affecting all of us and should not be used as political gain, this is disgusting to me and lots of Americans I am
sure. This is just another thing that will backfire while the main stream media clearly is out of bounds.

I would never wish for a virus to hit while Obama was in Office for political gain, never on my life.

Some of this media honestly seem they are wishing for this. I am paying attention, I hope everyone is.

I am hearing Utahn's panicking all over the place right now on the radio. Stores are filled with people just going nuts to boot.

This is the most embarrassing time to be a journalist of all time in my opinion if you are affiliated with any of this.

Regardless of political affiliation.

Yes, I as well.  Don't mistake my "blowing off steam" for lack of concern for those truly affected.  At the end of the day, we're all just people.

I must admit discussing this on a Bengals message board is amusing. 3 years is too early to say John Ross is a bust but a few weeks is all it takes to be sure a contagion is contained.

It IS spread through airborne pathogens... Also the flu has a regular season that goes away. There are vaccines for the flu, and we have centuries of experience of dealing with it.

We know very little about this virus, and it's only been around since January... It seems to be spreading exponentially. Give it time. I've heard estimates of between 75 and 150 million Americans being affected, and over 100,000,000 dead worldwide when it's all said and done.
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.
