According to ESPN, the problem was that BP wanted a two year extension in order to waive his no trade clause and the Nats wouldn't do it.

I read where Phillips "agreed to defferred compensation" when he signed the contract with the Reds, but I don't see how that makes any difference. if he is traded his entire contract goes with him.

The Reds would save millions of dollars by dumping his contract in exchange prospects. Don't know why they would not give a little to make the trade work.
