One Commander gets a crazy idea based on hearsay and makes it a rule. Then it stays operational for 15 years. Tourist agencies in the US pick it up. All kinds of people/women wear short sleeves, even during Ramadan. I used to carry a long sleeve shirt when I drove off base. I would put it on to get through the check points. Then take it off once off base. On my way back, I would put it on before returning to base. Don't let these "warnings" drive your imagination overtime. You are safer in Qatar than in Cincinnati or Florida. Well no way I put that to the test. Crazy stuff. The Muslim’s are just nutty. Anyone who hates bacon is questionable at best lol https://www.smartertravel.com/2017/02/16/tips-qatar-warnings-dangers-stay-safe/ Quote:Tips on Qatar Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe! The right wing media has you so worked up Lucy. How many tourists have EVER been killed or attacked in Qatar?? Let's you and me go there for the world cup. I'll show you the abandoned forts in the desert, the singing dunes, the camel races at Al Shanniniyah, the best restaurants. We'll smoke Cuban cigars on the balcony of La Cigale. For "rich" westerners the place is a paradise. You will forget all about those workers. here is the Al Wakrah World Cup Stadium Here is the Khalifa Stadium. I watched Brazil and England play there once. Everything is state of the art. The codes are stricter than in other places. Nudity is not acceptable at any time. This is particularly important for women. It is advisable to be as conservative as possible in your dress. Do not bring a bikini or a blouse with a revealing neckline. Women should cover their hair at all times, especially when in a public place. Men should also be careful dressing. Despite the hot climate, leave the short sleeves and the shorts at home. Apply the same rules of dressing to all your family members including young children. They should also be covered up. So funny!! Ok, your source is right about the Pork. They get worked up over that. Leave your bacon at home. They will take it away in the airport. But do bring your bikini. Just don't wear it downtown or by a Mosque. I don't recall ever seeing a Western woman cover her hair. No one cares what you say about the Emir. If you painted a big sign saying "HELL WITH THE EMIR" and stood in the Market place you might get arrested. But you could sit in a restaurant and smoke Shisha and go on and on about "scum" and what a s***hole country this place with better infrastructure than the US is because the Emir is whatever. People will just think you are crazy. As far as covering hair--show your tourist warning to the Emir's daughter Mayassa. She is doing it wrong! Qatar has banned alcohol on the fabulous Pearl Island and the Old Souk, but it is available in every luxury tourist hotel and restaurant. Here is that balcony I was referring to where we could smoke Cuban cigars while enjoying the view. Seen here from the wet bar. People will just think you are crazy. I’m sure it’s fascinating in its own right. If I want to go to a muslim country we will go Azerbaijan. Baku is cool. As for these Muslim countries who exploit their people yet have great cities. I could care less, it bothers me more that they are enslaving people. I don’t have any patience for these hardline muslim countries. So for that reason I don’t go there, not until at least I have seen everything else or they straighten themselves out. Iran for instance used to be cool. Now it’s a disaster. Did you look closely at the pictures above? Qatar is doing very well. People don't go there because they want to go to a "Muslim country." They go there to see a 21st century city, with 21st century amenities. Baku has about one modern office building built in the last 20 years. Why don't they get off their butts and find some natural gas, like Qatar did? |
