Beto O'Rourke, $38m, and Party Politics - TheLeonardLeap - 10-16-2018 So I have no idea about anything else with this guy, what his political stances are, or anything of that sort. That said, I came across this article and I wanted to point out something I saw that I liked. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/beto-orourke-wont-share-his-dollar38m-with-fellow-democrats/ar-BBOrqgF?OCID=ansmsnnews11 Quote:Rep. Beto O'Rourke announced Monday that he will not share any of his $38.1 million war chest, even though Democratic bosses want the cash for more competitive states. Let me start off by saying I absolutely hate that $38m is even an amount that CAN be spent on elections. The amount of money spent in these things are just gross and I hope something is done about it. THAT SAID.... I really liked this part: "Folks contributed to this race because they want us to win this race. If they want to contribute to another campaign, of course they're welcome to do that" I never understood how it ever became an acceptable practice to share donated money from one campaign to another in a different state. If money is donated to a candidate, it should be used by that candidate. If it is donated to a political party, then they should be able to spread it out however they want. The idea that I could donate money to someone whose platform I support and it could be given away to someone I may not support, without my consent always seems like an awfully skeezy thing to do. Not sure how that became not just accepted, but expected, but I am glad that someone decided to not participate. Hopefully it catches on and spreads. We don't need states getting involved in other states elections. RE: Beto O'Rourke, $38m, and Party Politics - BmorePat87 - 10-16-2018 Yea, this is stupid money being spent, but he's got a point. Somehow he became this huge figure and he is getting people to donate money, so why not use it? He's banking his political future on a long shot, he might as well try? Which is why I wouldn't donate monetarily to a political candidate, but I would give my time (and plan to if I ever make a career change). RE: Beto O'Rourke, $38m, and Party Politics - michaelsean - 10-17-2018 True. They didn't donate to the Democrat Party, they donated to him. Many could be mostly Republican, but they like him as a candidate. RE: Beto O'Rourke, $38m, and Party Politics - Belsnickel - 10-17-2018 Yeah, this was something I had heard some liberal talking heads bantering about and everyone seemed pretty much in agreement that Beto should be keeping the money. This is why I only have loyalties to my local party organization, because of bullshit like this, and I say this as someone with three competitive House races around me that could use more money. |
