I'm going to guess Carlos meant playing a basically vanilla defense with little blitzing or outside the box thinking. A typical Merv play not to lose game.
As for the holding there was a play I'm gonna go back and find it where I believe it was Carlos and the Olineman had his jersey stretched out a foot ! Nothing, crickets
I believe the Squeelers had a big gain on the play. I was floored there was no penalty !
