Stupid car question - michaelsean - 01-31-2019

Yesterday, thanks in part to the cold, I discovered I needed a new battery. I got a jump and a new battery without a problem, but I started wondering, why don’t they make cars with cranks anymore. Battery died? No problem. Crank her up and go get a new one. I believe they used to make cars with batteries and a crank. Seems you could hide the place you insert the crank easily enough. Would it just not work with today’s cars?

There's no way anyone is going to turn over a modern car engine by hand.

Now I do think they could add in a small single start backup battery that you could switch to in situations like you were in to solve the issue...

That's been the thing I always wondered why they didn't do. I would think a smaller battery like maybe one for a motorcycle would start it. Then the alternator would take care of the bigger battery.

It would be complicated but they could have a crank that tightened a spring device.  Wind it up several turns then release it to turn the engine over once.

They actually make mini battery pack jumpers you can keep in your car and get a quick jump from. I have one, I think it cost like 80-90 dollars.

I already had mine hooked up to another car when a guy came over with one of those.  I'm definitely getting one.

Way too much compression in the modern engine.  You can turn the crank manually when doing timing belt/chain jobs, working on overhead cams, valves, and the like to get to TDC....but plugs are out, and other components are removed.  Also, I'm not sure how it would work with all of the EFI, sensors, and electronic spark control. Old engines relied on carbs and manual distributors versus coil packs.

Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some ******' muscle.

Fun Fact:  David Hasselhoff wasn't the first Michael Knight.

Michael Long was the first name of the character played by Larry Anderson.

He got shot in the face(LOL)and had to have reconstructive surgery.

They voiced over the Hoff's voice and he assumed the role following the pilot after the character got a new face.

Yup, but I would think by now someone would have built it into the car, i.e. you turn the key and it doesn't turn over, so you press the aux battery button and it fires up so you can go buy a new battery.

I'm almost willing to bet that on some models, you can add that as an option.
