Anniversary coming up - HarleyDog - 04-10-2016

Next weekend is my wife and I's 3rd anniversary. Any idea's of what to do around the Cincinnati area? I was thinking a hotel, maybe some blues and a good dinner. Not really sure what we are doing and I want it to be a surprise so was seeking advice or ideas.

Has anyone tried the BB riverboats? I was on a BB cruise about 25yrs ago as a teenager but curious how it is now?

An eightball and a hooker.

I think they mostly do party cruises - as in large groups. From what I understand they can be pretty rowdy. Getting drunk with an office full of people you don't know or the alumni from a school you didn't attend may not be the best anniversary vibe. Or, it may be right up your alley.

If you go this route one of the better neighborhood blues bars is over in Newport: Mansion Hill Tavern. As far as I know they still book live bands Friday and Saturday and they used to have an open jam on Sundays.

I just ran into someone from back home the other day and he told me Walt's Hitching Post is under new management and really has a good kitchen again. Dee Felice in Covington - if it is still there - is another nice place for a dinner and some nights they have a jazz band... The food isn't the greatest at Rookwood Pottery but it is decent and it is kind of a fun place to eat if you have never been - it used to be a pottery and you can tell when you are inside as you can see kilns where they used to fire stuff. Plus there are nice views of the city from up there and you can bar hop after dinner. Parking sucks in Mt Adams though making it a great place to limo or cab to.

What about the casinos? As a rule they have good food and in addition to gambling some have entertainment and the hotel thing you talked about is an option at most if not all of them.

While trying to do some research on where to enjoy some good blues bands, 3 places have gained my interest.

1. The Southgate House Revival Sanctuary in Newport. However, not sure about the venue which includes 500 miles to Memphis, Warsaw Falcons, 90 proof twang and Bootleg Rider. Also, Southgate has received some mixed reviews but no favorable places in Covington/Newport to enjoy good music that I can find.

2. The Slippery Noodle - Indianapolis,IN. Peter Novelli will be playing there next Saturday. Had a chance to listen in and am impressed by his style, and I love slide guitar. In addition, there is a revolving restaurant above the Hyatt which sounds like a nice experience.

3. Firehouse BBQ and Blues - Richmond, IN. Gordon Bonham Band with stylish blues. Very impressive. However, that's it for Richmond. They don't seem to have anything else I'm looking for towards a good anniversary experience.

Not really looking for an 8ball and hooker. Would like to celebrate another anniversary next year if I could.

I tried researching Mansion Hill Tavern but could not find much about the place or who's playing, so I kind of gave up on that place. I didn't think about the casino angle, so that is going to widen my search and I appreciate that advice.

My Junior Prom was on a Riverboat about 30 years ago.  It was called the Johnston Party Boat. It was not much fun. You could not leave when you wanted or more importantly when you date was ready  to go to the hotel. (Holidome on Sharon Rd)

RE: Anniversary coming up - Goalpost - 04-11-2016

My brother just went on the Riverboat this weekend. It was a large party type deal...25 people or so.
Sounds like they were on the water from about 630 to 9ish. Took some nice pictures of the city. Thought the food was good, etc. I think it exceeded his expectations.

Never been, but everyone I know that's into the blues swears by the place.

The original Southgate House was and still is a great dive to see shows in. There was a split in the business and the result was the "Revival" opening a few blocks away. I have not seen a show there, but have heard the acoustics are good as it is in an old church. I would feel confident going to a show at the old Southgate House by Newport on the Levy or at the Revival which is about 8 blocks up in town. Never been to the Noodle but know lots of folks who have and endorse it too.

I havent made a decision yet because everything I want is in different locations. Love the riverboat idea but everything after has to be cab fare. If only Sonny Landreth was in town, it would be perfect. Best damn blues guitarest in the country.
