Thomas Jefferson did not print them in English. He purchased two copies in English (his first was destroyed in a fire) because his encounter with a Muslims from Tripoli left him curious about Islam after he was informed that their religion gave them the right to attack ships of other nations and enslave the prisoners they took. There were printings of the Koran in the country starting in 1806 and it was not uncommon for men with some education to have a copy and be familiar with it.

Of course, Jefferson said it best himself. "For it is in our lives, and not from our words, that our religion must be read. By the same test the world must judge me.”

Yes and he saw how violent and irrational they were and straight away in his presidency he went and stomped them out.

None of which he blamed on their religion. All of his writings on the topics of the Barbary pirates indicate he saw it as more of a political and economic issue than a religious one.

Really.... So I guess the part where he read they wanted to overthrow any nation who doesn't say their God is the only God. That didn't make a difference to Jefferson?

His writings on the matter indicated he did not take what he was told at face value (which is why he studied the Koran) and believed their motivations to be more secularly motivated than they claimed, using religion to try to justify motivations of other kinds.

So after reading it ..... He launches an offensive against them almost as soon as he becomes president

Are you suggesting he launched an offensive against the Barbary pirates because he read a copy of the Koran?

...I don't know what to say in response to a statement that is so blatantly ignorant of the history we are discussing. I'm going to let this thread return to its lighthearted ways, now.

He read to understand them and their motivations.   violent people only understand violence.

Why pay the Non Muslim tax that they require?

I'm going to follow matts lead and let this thread return to the lighthearted fun it's supposed to be.  History is way more complicated than you're suggesting.

Couldn't this line of thinking be applied to our fairly violent culture, as well?

Possibly..... If you find where it's written that we kill or tax those who don't worship as we worship.

To me it's not about the violence as much as the reason for the violence. You and I don't worship the same way but by no means do I expect you to pay me money because of the way you choose to worship or not worship. I also don't want to murder you and your family for the same reason.

Besides you and I share the same view on Carson Palmer haha.

I always laugh when Dems pull this one out.

From January 2011 to October 2015 Rubio has missed 176 out of 1437 roll call votes. Which comes out to about 12.2%.

When Obama was a senator from January 2005 to October 2008 he missed 314 out of 1,300 votes. Or 24.2%.

Rubio still has a ways to go to catch up to Ol' Barry.  Ninja
