Second, how do you define substantial?
I mean, in one sense every biblical story is a myth, not just Exodus. But, from what I remember of a 20 pound door stopper of a book on the history of Israel there were many small groups of people who were taken in under the umbrella during the Exodus wanderings. My teacher called them "a motley crew." So while the original Hebrew slaves may not have been "substantial" in numbers, I do believe they existed in history.
