Well, it you include all of the Mediterranean (Greece, Italy, North Africa, Middle East, Iberian Peninsula, I am about 11% so I guess that makes sense.
A lot of people forget the Germanic influence on Italy, though. Hell, in northern Italy German is still the prevalent language in some areas.
