BREAKING: Eifert to have ankle surgery

Moving The Chains has doctors on regularly to discuss injuries and such.

Yesterday the doc they had on said there was nothing unusual with this situation.

Without having seen the medical record, he could only speculate on the what the actual injury is, but his educated opinion was that it was a loose tendon and named the particular one that would be the offender.

The doctor said the typical approach would be to allow it to heal naturally (as was done), but if it was determined that it had not responded as desired at this point there are only two options.

The first is surgery, generally to detach and shorten the tendon, then re-attach it.  Typically they will also clean out the joint at the same time as they are in a great position to do so and it adds nothing to the recovery time.

The other option is to do nothing in hopes that it progresses on its own.  With the second option, the player can still play if his pain threshold allows it, however the tendon will make him much more susceptible to rolling and spraining the joint.

As Kirwan then pointed out, every good team would make the decision at this time to have the surgery now and possibly lose a key player for a couple of September games.  The bad teams, he said, would do nothing and have a key player for game one only to be coming out of the game regularly until mid-October, when they have to finally admit the surgery is a neccessity and IR him.
