I think the problem is that a lot of people tend to categorize the tribes by their languages. I could talk about the Monacan, Tutelo, Saponi, Mattaponi, Chickahominy, or the Powhatans, but their language groups were Siouan and Algonquin, and since Virginia tribes aren't federally recognized people tend to go with that instead for identity.
