I think it's more of a romanticized ideal. I think that most Americans subconsciously think of Native Americans as a flawless people who lived off the land. They like to believe they come from some sort of warrior culture. My parents, and many of yours grew up listening to westerns on the radio, and watching them on the big screen. It's only natural that exaggeration sets in somewhere.
