Crazy. Muslim countries even pick and choose which parts to codify into law. 

Sure, Muslim countries decide the punishment they wish to impose on violations of Sharia, not sure if that's the same of picking and choosing the parts you want to follow. Sharia can be interpreted but not altered.  But I'll take your word for it; as you have seen it first hand.
