After reading this it seems your biggest issue is with the jury that awarded him $1. As others have pointed out they were offered far more and refused it. An honest mistake was made, they could have had everything that a person wrongfully arrested and mistreated would want; acknowledgment of wrongdoing, an apology and a monetary settlement. Instead they chose to hold out for a bigger pay day and crapped out.
Seems the me the real lesson here is don't be greedy and think you won the lotto because of a mistake.
