Nixon actually would have been fine with Watergate had he not immediately went into covering up something he probably had nothing directly to do with.

Well you know when emails are   lost when computers conveniently  crash and there is no backup sometimes evidence is hard to come by.  Well there is no backup that they know of.  There actually is a backup, but darn darn, those were magnetically erased because nobody realized they were a backup.  I remember reading about one admin that accidentally erased some tape.  Apparently back then that didn't get you off the hook.
