If I recall correctly your Cub Cadet is the same as my Troy Bilt Super Bronco (both by MTD) from the same era.  The oil dipstick is very inaccurate, so it is easy to overfill and have oil get into the combustion chamber and smoke and stall.  Try keeping the oil level close to the FILL mark if you can, and the smoking should cease.
