Not that it's the case in Europe, but it can be argued that "modern" socialism doesn't control the economy through publicly owned assets, but rather accomplishes that through taxes and regulation (which through dictating "margins" and how you operate is effectively the same as owning the business).  And I'm not making a case against regulation, but merely saying there are degrees of regulation that range from safety to fairness all the way to virtually outright control.

Mainly that is the case for healthcare, though there's a strong push for the same in the energy sector....and those two combined are like 25% of the economy (which is pretty significant).
