And not even just old people.  Just 25 years ago teens were far more violent, smoked more, and got pregnant a lot more, but even people who grew up in that era will whine about "kids today".

This has always been the case Fred.. Older people will always pine for the 'good old days' never seeming to want to remember that polio could cripple or kill your kids, entire families were wiped out by consumption, better known now as turberculosis .
We had fairly routine pandemics and old people were often left to fend for themselves before the New Deal and entire families starved during economic downturns and depressions.
If the good old days were so great then why did anyone even want progress?
Some people do want to get back to the idea of progress and raising living standards for everyone instead of the few. It kind of works both ways. One of the things that lead up to war (and still does) is they're all bankers wars fought to defend the fortunes of a handful of extremely rich people who have absolutely no intention of sharing the wealth and are always willing to sacrifice your kids to defend their fortunes and tell us we're defending freedom.
Think about how many young people rushed to join up to defend freedom after 911. That war is still raging to this day 17 years later with no end in sight and our national treasure is being squandered faster than at any time to "defend freedom".. Can anyone think of any benefit to the nation? I certainly can't.
